Observations at Hometown Wal-mart.

I stopped shopping at Wal-Mart for unrelated reasons a few weeks ago...the service was just so terrible here in SE New Mexico that it became a matter of principle.

That being said, I find that it is more important to support local gun shops than the big guys, so I pay out the ear at local shops, and keep the options open.

I am not anti-corporation by any means, and believe in rewarding success; however, in most cases, I can afford to make my purchases at the local shops, and feel good about supporting the same guys/gals that are fighting for our rights.

When was the last time you saw Wal-Mart sponsoring your local NRA Dinner, or a Ducks Unlimited Fund raiser? The local shops support these types of organizations all the time.

confuseus. Don't blame walmart, it's a federal law that prohibits sale of pistol ammo to people under 21...

Some gun stores will "size you up" and only card you if you look young, but walmart is a big corporation and thus doesn't want a class action lawsuit because some hourly worker gave you the benefit of the doubt...

Two recent WW events

Local WW was out of clay targets, so on the way home from visiting relatives in the PSRK is stopped at a WW for targets. Checked the boxes when I loaded them in the cart, but when I got to truck, turned one box over and it sounded like crumbs, open the bottom and one whole row broken. Take the box back to the store and told clerk. She said I'd have to go to returns (all the way to the front of the store (I parked in the automotive area). I complained and she said ok... you can go to the sporting goods counter and have them "cleanse" it. Fine. So I go to the counter, no one there, put the box of targets on the counter to be "cleansed", go get another and out I go. As I pass the clerk, she says "get it cleansed ok" I said yep, all taken care of

Event two. Went for .22 ammo at local WW. Regular guys not there (we usually BS a while) The "alternate clerk" helped me. I want the bulk .22 ammo. After THREE "is it this one" finally got it. The standard question was asked "for rifle or pistol" neither, it's for shotgun. At my age I figure, dumb question deserves dumb answer (never get the "question" from the regular guys, I think they pick for me). Like someone else said, I always pay for gun stuff with cash, even high end guns, even though we don't have no stinking forms:D

and the umc 100rd value packs were over $30.

I believe that is JHP ammo you're looking at. That's what I feed my Ruger P90 for SD purposes. It's 32 something for a 100 round value pack. I've never seen the UMC FMJ value packs at my local Wally World.

I was up in Boone, NC and Hickory, NC a week ago and saw something I've never seen in a Wally World. The one in Boone sells reloading supplies! Presses, brass, powders, bullets. That is news to me. They still had guns too.

you might be right and that would explin the price thing but i was pretty sure that they were fmj's. i'm probally mistakin!

I love where I live. Our local Wallyworld still carries both guns and ammo, but the local gun stores do FAR better than WW!:D In fact, our entire downtown revitalized very soon after WW built a superduper center in town. It was weird! We got a new gun store, a new pet store, a new shoe shop and a new arts/crafts place, all in the original downtown, within a few months of SuperDuperWallyWorld opening. And they're all still open two years later!

because there is so little profit margin on guns anyway corporate has decided that it would be more profitable to just get rid of them than to risk trouble with the BATFE

That's because you guys should carry WASR-10s. Then you'd have record sales.
