Wal-Mart limiting ammo now?

Walmart is limiting my centerfire pistol ammunition to 0 boxes as they never have any. I usually shoot Winchester white box and I haven't seen any, except in .25, for months. A couple weeks ago I saw a few boxes of Remington 9mm and I should have bought it, as I'm almost out now. (Local gun stores have low stocks too, although not empty shelves, but I'm not yet ready to pay twice the Walmart price.) Birdshot, rifled slugs, .25, .22 mag. and some hunting calibers are all they have.

As frustrating as it is not to be able to purchase bargain-priced ammo from Walmart and to have the early bird buy it all up, I don't think they should limit purchases.

Since it's not limiting purchases for safety reasons, I think it's fine. It's really becoming a PITA to go to Walmart and see them out of every caliber except for obscure/hunting only calibers. About a month ago, I walked into a Walmart and I was passing by the sporting goods section when I heard, "Yeah, finally, we have boxes of 9mm." I went up and bought 10 of them because I knew that if I didn't, I'd never see them again for a couple months. Yes, I know, it's kind of hypocritical for me to advocate limits when I bought 10 boxes, but understand, I normally would have bought 2 at most. It was just the thought of the ammo not being there for a couple months due to 1 or 2 people buying the entire stock.

You guys who are suggesting limiting ammo must be from states where you take your gun rights for granted. I live in California. I can't even fathom suggesting more restrictions on anything gun related. I know the rationale for limited ammo. It's just that nothing good will come of it in the long run.

Michigan Wally Marts . . .

Suddenly seem out-of-stock or LOW on specific ammo types. Mine is out of Federal Bulk Pack .22 Long Rifles. Not that I'd want Reminton Bulk Packs, but they were out of those too. cliify, just recently.

In a weird way guys hoarding ammo is working like gun control by keeping others from being able to find ammo to shoot.

Funny. I consider more ammunition in the hands of private individuals to be the complete antithesis of gun control.

If Wal-Mart had any sense, they would just price their ammunition high enough such that there was always just a little bit of ammunition in stock. Any store is foolish not to follow the laws of supply and demand. Only in a production-based economy (like Soviet Russia and the former Eastern Bloc) do we find massive surpluses or massive shortages that require rationing.

I think all gun stores should limit us to 2 boxes of ammunition (100 rounds) per month. It's really just "sensible." After all, who really needs more than 100 rounds per month except for crazy gun nuts who hoard 100's and 100's of rounds of ammunition?
WHAT??? I hope you are being Facetious.. I shoot about 800 rounds of .22 target each week; and another 100 rounds of .357 mag...

BTW, there is plenty of ammo out there.. You have to check out alternate sources..My federal firearms transfer dealer has a small shop and he sells among other ammo reloaded .357 mag ammo for $13 a box of 50.. I can buy a case of 5000 Federal Target 40 g 22 LR for $230 OTD... most transfer dealers are happy to make a small profit on each transaction, just for the business in these tough times.. Good luck

I guess in a perfect world there would be ammunition growing from trees. Walmart is a company that wants to make money and they want to keep their customers happy and they probably decided that 10 happy customers buying 2 boxes of ammo is better than one buying 20. I mean look at a Walmart. Do you really think they are all about the best deals on ammo? They want you to buy everything you ever need there. Ammo gets you in the door. It is their right to decide how they want to serve their customers their products. If you don't like it go somewhere else. If you want someone who will sell you ammo more freely then go to someone who sells only ammo.

It's a free country. Walmart can do what they want.

...and if I don't like it, I'll give my money to someone else. Personally, I don't like being told how much ammo I can or cannot buy.

JakeMcCoy's post sounds right to me. I'm in California too...no good will come from limiting ammunition purchases, so I'm against it--but it's their store, their rules.

I'll just buy on the 'net. So far, I've been lucky--every sixth or seventh trip into Wallyworld, I'll catch them right when they're stocking ammo, or they've just got some that they haven't put out yet. They're actually very cool with me here in Southern California--they have no problem going "in back" to check to see if any ammunition came in that hadn't been put out yet, and if so, sell it to me quite courteously. Good people. YMMV.

My local indoor range is limiting the number of boxes of 380 that can be purchased at a time due to its short supply, but is not doing that for any other chambering.

I would like to see a limit of 10 boxes so everybody gets a shot

That kind of thinking has no place in a free market.

You have the same opportunity as those who buy all they can.

That's socialist thinking at the least and has no place in America.

You all just need to man up and quit crying like a bunch of school girls.

That particular Walmart may have figured out that eventually people get tired of stopping in to see if there is anything but bare ammo shelves. People stopping in for ammo usually buy something else....sales drops overall when fewer people come through the door.
I got to that point myself. I don't bother with the Walmarts now, I buy bricks of .22LR and boxes of 9mm WWB from Vance's as they have it on sale, the rest of the stuff I buy online now.

As for limitations? If people would stop freaking out and just buy what they really need, there would be no artificial shortage.

We are our worst enemy--Pro gunners that believe there should be limits on purchases of ammo, or increases in prices. Just another way to errode your rights. Your Wal Marts are ripping you off. The Wal Marts in my area always have ammo until I visit their stores. Then they are forced to restock that same night. No limits and no price increases. We have been ripped off--I have .40 caliber that I paid $9.50 per 100 in 2006 now it is $26.50 per hundred plus tax, a $17.00 increase in 3 years.

Zombiesahead did you really mean to use antithesis?
1 a (1) : the rhetorical contrast of ideas by means of parallel arrangements of words, clauses, or sentences (as in "action, not words" or "they promised freedom and provided slavery") (2) : OPPOSITION , CONTRAST <the antithesis of prose and verse> b (1) : the second of two opposing constituents of an antithesis (2) : the direct opposite

The lack of self awareness by some is amazing. They buy 15 of the 100 round boxes at once and then turn around and complain because they cannot find any ammo on the shelves.

ammo buying

Everyone should take a deep breath and try to calm down.If things get worse, and they probably will, there won't be hundreds of people storming our homes. We will not need thousands of rounds to stop the Goblins. What we will certainly see is some civil unrest and crime will get worse. All this panic buying is doing is creating scarcity of ammo and forcing prices way up.

I'm curious, what does everyone else think? Has anyone else heard of a Wal-Mart limiting ammo?

Well I dunno. Just to add to the data I bought 8 boxes of Blazer Brass .40 3 days ago, all they had in the store. I asked about limits and they had no idea what I was talking about.

You can keep your "rationing" in my opinion. I can't believe so many people are willing to be "regulated" so they can get a couple of boxes of ammo. There are plenty of sites that you can order ammo from. Worst case scenario, you're put on back order and have to wait a few weeks.

Jorg hit the nail on the head. Two years ago this message board would have been screaming, but now we're willing to "compromise" a little so that we can have some "convenience"? Wow.

I'm enjoying the "panic" if you will. I'm hoping for new gun owners joining the fray. I'm also looking to broke gun buyers who bought into the panic to sell me their guns on the cheap later!!!

Finally. Now maybe some hoarder won't stop me when I just want to pick up a couple boxes of WWB for practice. I'm going to make sure my local Walmart does this until the ammo shortage is gone.

But, what promise do we have that they will stop doing it? Hmm..

Walmart had to do this with the Wii game systems in the begining and they willingly stopped once supply started to keep up with demand.

If you know a hoarder, not someone that just wants to stay well stocked, but an illogical, obscene hoarder please tell them to stop. It is getting ridiculous.

Drumz... Powder and primers are in the same boat. Can't find it.

This same type of behavior was happening with wood pellets this winter, and all of the dealers set limits. It was not fair that only the rich could heat thier homes in an ice storm. I know, same situation but when you are the guy who has $30 of play money a week and some guy puts $1000 of ammo on his credit card it does not feel much different.

Ok rant over. All I can say is look over your shoulder before you buy every box in the store to make sure *I* am not standing behind you.

Who gets to define "well stocked?"

Saturday, Walmart had 4 boxes of WWB 100 pk. I'd not seen any of that since the election. It was after 10 pm, so they wouldn't sell it. I would've bought all 4. Next day, someone just beat me to it. He spent $600 on ammo, they told me, and he drove up from TX to get it.

Yesterday, they had just put out some Blazer Brass. I was going to buy the same 400 rds, or 8 boxes. One guy took 3, I took the remaining 7. 5 minutes had elapsed from when they put it out. Another guy showed up "late," so I offered him one of my 7, but he declined.

I "only" have about 2000 rds of factory 9mm on hand, so am I hoarding? I bought it when I saw it and will do so again.

But I didn't buy any .357, .40 or .45.........so am I ok again ?

Much of the problem is that walmart only gets in 10 boxes (500 rds) of any given pistol caliber at a time. It doesn't take too long for that to run out.

Altho, I've noticed that even 30-30 ammo runs out regularly, even with hunting season being over. Odd.

Because ?

count me in the same camp as jorg, throttlejockey, jakemccoy, feedthehogs, and ezenbrowntown.

i honestly am surprised that so many people here are actually in favor of this. this paternalistic rationing has no place in a free market economy. if folks even here can't understand and accept that, then i really do fear for the direction this great country is heading.
