I have a old .22 cal single shot rifle marked "Springfield Arms Company, Chicopee Falls Mass. USA"

I can't find any reference for this company. Did someone else build it? It has the number 14 with a circle around it stamped on the barrel where you would normally find a proof mark. Is that a model number?

I had two "Spingfield" marked .22s when I was a kid. A semi-auto tube repeater and a manually cocking single shot bolt gun. Both were obviously made by Savage (Savage marketed almost identical models). Savage simply used the Spingfield name for their econo line of guns. They employed plain hardwood stocks with glossy varnish finishes for these models. They were both very servicable rifles.
