“Do you shoot to reload or reload to shoot?”

More correctly... I handload, and I shoot. The two are exclusive. I also shoot factory, so I don't have to reload to shoot, per se... although some of the cartridges I shoot would put me in the poorhouse if I didn't handload. And I like the process of handloading in and of itself, for the most part. Grinding through 800+ .308 cases with my dinosaur Pacific trimmer isn't fun, but the end results are rewarding... so there is that, but by and large, the rest of it is in the 'fun' column.

Nobody here reload to horde?

just to know that you can make 10,000 of 9mm or .224 or .45 or whatever!

I accidentally reload and horde.

I reload because I truly enjoy it but I don't get a chance to shoot it up (only managed to get out 4-5 times the in the last 2-3 years) so I end up hoarding.

For 20 or so years, I would get with my best friend and we'd shoot 4-5 times a week!

I enjoy reloading. It's great me time. And load development is a lot fun. Trimming is the only part im not crazy about. I do have a lot of ammo hoarded too. Because i have a habit of loading what i shot. And loading brass i find too. This coming up shooting season. Im not going to load until the winter. Except for the brass i don't have a lot of.

I'm a dork and I enjoy the sorting, and taking all the steps to prep...

...Once done with the first batch I ever made (30-30) I thought, "oh boy! I need to shoot these so I can load them again!"

Ha! I'm itching to do that very thing!

Got my hands on 150 new Starline .45 colt then loaded and shot em for my 1st time with this caliber.

Loaded them back up and can't wait to empty them again so I can start all over!

I say chore. X100.

And I have progressive presses set up for my cartridges i shoot a lot. Never change the settings or bullet/ charge weights. AND I STILL loathe going to reload. I tried doing smaller batches more often... hated that too. Ive found it best to just go get it over with and make a bunch at a time.

Other than maybe 3-500 rounds for oddball guns ive had to load when i ran out, for in the past 10 years I have done next to no loading.

I enjoyed it for a few years fresh out of high school. Maybe some day it'll come back.

(The enjoyment.... not high school)

I've got a Wife ,who unlike many other women enjoys pulling the trigger and as some things I own run belts and belt-less ammo by the container full , Might Not Last long
Seriously for Me #56 years ago reloading came out of necessity ,it later came out of accuracy and once you go down that hole it closes in and consumes you .

I have a Tip for ANYONE who is thinking about buying and old surplus obsolete pistol or Rifle ,especially Military ; DON'T DON'T DON'T do it !.:D
You'll be fire forming cutting trimming otherwise known as cannibalizing perfectly GOOD cases to feed a BAD HABIT :)

I have several thousand rounds of various calibers loaded up. I normally don't cast bullets or load up another batch until I run out of a caliber. Then I'll load up maybe a thousand of handgun or 2-300 rifle rounds or cast up 5-600 bullets. I have a shop I cast and reload in. I put on some George Jones and take my time. I don't rush myself and it's very relaxing. The nice part is if I get tired I stop and leave everything as it is. It's there waiting for me the next time.

I enjoy reloading. I doubt it has saved me much money but I sure do a lot more shooting now than I did before I started reloading.

Exactly Reloading used to save Big money on Big rifle and pistol cartridges . Not so much any longer given the current cost of gear components and IF one factored in their time ; It's a DEAD LOSS . Just MY opinion . I still do it regularly simply because I spent Years accumulating gear and components and only NOW is that paying ME back to a degree .

Primers are I believe EVERY RE-LOADERS nightmare . #5 years ago $75.50 per 5K ,Now $750.00 per 5K :fire: What went south !.

Cheapest foreign primers at a gun show--------to--------most expensive rifle magnums on Gunbroker.......!!!!

C'mon man, not really comparing apples to apples with that statement.
I don't doubt the cheap Tula's at $15/k 5 years ago, but the current prices are much less than $150/k....they are listed on the forum's component thread at $75/k

Reloading Primers – Reloading Unlimited

I like to shoot at stuff and hit where I aim. Way back, if I wanted to shoot alot I had to reload as we were dirt poor. As I got better at it I also started making more money so I got better stuff to reload with and piles of supplies. It always has been a calming thing to reload ammo for me. Just kinda forget other things wnen I am in the zone. Then I started casting. So now years later I am retired, spend the cold winter months prepping brass so that I can make enough ammo for a range trip just before I go. Oh, did I tell you I am retired now and enjoy making all kinds of ammo on a single stage press because I think it's a lot of fun. Years ago I had to plan better to fit reloading into the schedule but today I can be as meticulous as I want and have fun getting some ammo made. Yaaay!:D

Doesn’t everyone do the same?

Yes, to an extent…..
This past couple years is the first shortage I have been thru, so I guess I didn’t realize the “times of flush” to stock up…
I got lucky that I stumbled across a decent price on a good amount of primers right before the stupidity hit, just in the right place at the right time…
When the prices stabilize to what I think is good, I surely will take advantage of the “ flush stock up time”…..lesson learnt…..:)

I wished they’d gave us that COVID money before the primers disappeared!

I started (trying) to reload in 2020, as a hobby. Extra ammo for shooting was a partial motivation, but mostly something to do. I answered hobby with some strain primarily because of the component shortage. I enjoy the process but would like to have more opportunity to try different stuff versus just what's available.

Brass trimming is a chore.

pumping out nice shiny bullets every stroke is a joy. Hand measuring each charge and making sure the projectile goes in absolutely straight is a joy. Loading a months worth of skeet loads in a couple of nights is a joy.

shooting sub .75” groups at 200 yards is a joy!

But I hate trimming brass!!!!!!
