If that serial number is correct (off the butt) its a S&W, .38 Military and Police Model of 1902, 1st change, 1903-1904. In you photos the revolver looks to have a non-factory nickel finish, the hammer and trigger are plated also and both should be color case hardened as I understand it. I have a round butt 4" Model of 1905 1st Change that looks a lot like yours but I don't have those nice original grips, and mine was heavily chrome plated.

It appears you have a Smith & Wesson Model of 1902 M&P, 1st change. These revolvers were produced between 1905 and 1904.

The Model of 1902 revolvers have a different lockwork than a Model of 1905. Be careful, parts are hard to come by.

Do not fire this revolver with +P ammo. In fact many would say don't fire it with modern ammo. The cylinder, if original, is not hardened. The grips appear to be original. If you decide to remove them be careful, they become brittle with age, and originals are costly.

Unfortunately, it looks like your revolver has been poorly refinished in nickel or bumper chrome. That would place it at no more than Fair in condition, assuming the lockwork functions. $150 according to Supica's Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, 3rd Edition. For comparison, wanna cry? in ANIB condition, your revolver would run $1500. Still, your revolver as is, is pretty darned neat!

Thanks. My dad was a guard at Lone Stat Steel back in the day and this is what he carried.

Also have an old Smith 38S&W with a lanyard ring on the bottom of the grip.

Still shoot them from time to time. The 38 S&W is really neat to shoot
