Older Than Me

My inherited Krag and Shattuck 10 ga, my 92 Win, A Belgian ml double and a H Leman half stock rifle. Stevens Crack Shot and a 22 rolling block and an American Gun Co 410 double. I think that's it. Oops, Jap 99 which might be older.

Fewer and fewer every year it seems. Not too long ago over half were older than me but now it's down to just 25. And yes they all work and all get shot at least once a season and quite a few of them are among my regular carry choices.

After consulting my spreadsheet and making a couple educated guesses when in doubt, I come up with
28 (of 69) longarms and 15 (of 40) handguns owned that are younger than me.

I had initially thought the percentage of old stuff might be even higher. Not sure whether this signifies anything, but it made for an interesting (and brief) mental exercise.

This does suggest adding a column or two to my firearms spreadsheet to do the actual math.

Good idea, me too!

I did my current 'inventory' spreadsheet to help my wife figure out how badly she was being cheated on values after I passed, and to a lesser extent to keep track of my spending vs. time. Since she thwarted me and went first, I need to rethink the data columns I've used up until now and maybe add a few new ones.

Yeah, I'm thinking "Production Date"--the +avg() won't tell you much, but the +min() and +max() will be cool.
And, I'm thinking a column of +if([cell]<[year],1, 0). The +sum() of that column wuld give younger than [year], which could give an average or a percentage you your discretion.

I added a column to my spreadsheet awhile back to include the year of production where known, either from markings or SN/date table. Actually, most of this column remains blank so far.

You've started me thinking along the line of either adding bracketed start-stop production dates or simply the year of introduction. I'll have to ponder a bit more before deciding how I want to do this.

OCD mea culpa.

I think I have 8 that are over 100 and probably another dozen that are older than me.
My Ruger Mk1 target is likely among them as we were both 65 models but my birthday is in Dec lol.

Having been born in 1990 a long with having a taste for the classics I'm pretty sure my entire gun collection is older than me with the exception of my black powder revolver. My deer rifle is my Stevens 325 A made only in 1950 and 1951. My oldest gun was made in the 1850's as a musket then converted into a "Zulu shotgun" in the 1880's or 1890's I'm not sure. Most of my collection is from the 1950's, through 1980's. I have a Remington model 11 16 gauge from 1931. All my guns are fireable

Hmmmmmmm. You have 8 over 100 but you didn't say they are older than you. But you have a dozen that are older than you. Do we have a centarian among us? 😄

The ones I know are older than me in the safes; Win Mod 12 16 ga, Lefever Nitro Special 16 ga, Savage .410, Rem No 4 .22, Mauser k98 8mm Mauser, Lee-Enfield No. 4 Mk I .303, Remington 722 .257 Roberts, Saginaw Steering M1 Carbine, two SA M1 Garands, a Spanish Mauser in 7.62, Remington Sportsman 48 12 ga, two Remington 1100’s in 12 ga, a Wingmaster 870 12 ga, a S&W pre Mod 10 M&P .38 Spl, and a Marlin 39a Golden Mountie .22 that is older than me by a year.

I believe some of my S&W no-dash and early-dash revolvers predate my birth; Models 57, 37, and 17-2, but I havent checked the dates.

Stay safe.

Only 2 I can think of : my 1873 "trapdoor" Springfield , and my grandfathers single shot 12 gauge he bought in 1900 don't know fi it was new or used.

I have a flint lock pistol that I "suppose" is from the late 1700's-early 1800's era. No way I know to really tell. I also have a Colt 1860 Army that was used in the Civil War and a S&W 3rd model Russian that someone turned into a "belly" gun. My oldest modern gun, meaning smokeless powder, is a Winchester 94 saddle ring carbine which was made in 1919. I have my dad's model 12 Remington which is the first gun I ever fired as a little kid. I have the serial number list to tell when it was made but haven't bothered with checking to see if it predates me or not. I have no idea of the rounds that the Remington has fired over the years but it has been a bunch and it still works perfectly. The others are just to look at.

LOL
well since I stated in my post that I was born in December of 65 you wouldn't thunk the math is that hard.
I'm 57 so yes the ones that are over 100 are older than me also another dozen that are over 57.
So 8+12=20 total guns older than me for those youngsters that have been subjected to new math.

Sorry. I just had to yank your chain because of the way you worded it. I'm too old to do any kind of math. It makes my hair hurt. 😄

In poking around on mine, the best format--for me at least--looks to be 4 digit year number, for not needing to be interpreted out of Julian date or from text strings.
Kind of fun, if distracting, to go find general production years off of s/n.

To not skew things with blank entries, for newer, I just use the purchase date year, for younger, I just use the year before I'm born. My current weakest date is for my Mossberg M-44. I'm reasonably sure it's in the 50s, and likely around '55.

The "gun world" is long overdue a book on US military training rifles, like the M-44 and Remington 51 which were used and abused in so many ROTC ranges, soldiering on after the M-2 and M-22 Springfield trainers were worm out and surplussed.
