On an H&R can you remove a 26 inch barrel and install a 18.5 inch barrel?

I am looking at maybe buying an H&R with a 26 inch long barrel. The price is good, but I want a HD gun. Can you replace the 26 inch barrel with an 18.5 inch barrel? If so any ideas on what a replacement 18.5 inch barrel would cost?

Make a nice clean parrel cut with a hacksaw, recrown. Long barrell is now short. price of hacksaw is under $10,

Fitting a short barrel to a single-shot might run into unnecessary expense if the lock-up didn't turn out right on the other barrel.

The simplest and cheapest thing to do is cut off the 26" barrel and dress the saw cut with a fine file. If you want to re-set the bead sight, do it before cutting the barrel off.
It is much easier to mark the center line before you cut the barrel off.

If you are not tool friendly, any gunsmith could do it for a small fee.

A single-shot for home defense?
That's what I thought, I own a single shotgun shotgun too but anything that goes bump in the night will find me with a .32 revolver.
Reloading a single-shot usually requires you to take your eye off the target(s).
If I practiced daily I could get it down but I have better weapons I spend my time training on.

In addition to minimum permissible barrel length, there is minimum permissible overall length. Check local, state, and federal rules.

That whole Ruby Ridge fiasco was over a 1/2" too-short weapon, not barrel, and an unpaid $5 AOW tax.

This gives a whole new emphasis to the maxim "Measure twice. Cut once."

Just because you wouldn't do it doesn't make it an invalid choice for home defense.

Sounds like a deficiency in practice to me. You need to get to the range more :neener:

Go to the GRAY BEARD OUTDOORS website .click on the forums and scroll down to the H&R section. You will find plenty of info about making H&R 's into shorties, both rifles and shotguns. Ther is also a classified section that almost always has barrels for sale, and in the FAQ's you will find everything you will ever need to know about fitting barrels to the Handi guns.
