One caliber only?

I just bought a S&W .40 M&P. I have been reloading for it and, even though there are no small pistol primers in sight, I have found that I can use small rifle primers and lower my powder wieight about 5% with really good results from the seven yard line. I really like this pistol. It has a 15 round mag, never jams, is fairly light, has low recoil and I am certain that, if it ever comes to it, it will knock the crap out of anyone stupid enough to come into my house with evil intent while I am there.

I would consider a single pistol caliber far too limiting.

I shoot and reload for 9x19mm, .38 Special/.357 Magnum, .40 S&W, .44 Special/Magnum, and .45acp.

I stick to 9mm for semi-autos and .357/.38 for revolers. I do have one .45 ACP though. Everybody should have a 1911 in their collection (and a 1911 has got to be a .45 IMO :D).

For practical autoloaders (not plinkers / target guns), I will normally only consider .45 ACP. The problems associated with 9mm and .40 mean that there is no real question, in my opinion. A good .45 that's well-matched to its ammo will almost always match or outperform both 9mm and .40. I also tend to prefer Ruger pistols due to their reliability and durability, but would also consider Springfield. Glocks are a bit too vulnerable to ammo problems, in my opinion.

I DID recently make an exception, however, for a number of reasons. I purchased a Romanian Tokarev 7.62x25 pistol. One, it's still a very powerful round, with recoil close to that of a .45. Two, ammo is dirt cheap, allowing me to train without burning my wallet. Three, it's accurate, and snaps back to point of aim after shooting for rapid followup shots. Four, the Wolf hollowpoints reliably expand at least 50%, and the FMJ rounds will go through a Level II vest and mushroom to .46, and still get optimal penetration (.45 ACP rounds frequently do not expand reliably, even with hollowpoints). I got the pistol and 1224 rounds for just over $400. This pistol and caliber created a perfect storm of value and effectiveness, coupled with reliability and accuracy.

For revolvers, .357 or .38. That gives me a universal ammo type, and lets me use the .357 rounds in the large frame revolvers. This is more a rule of thumb, however, as these are immediate home defense guns and thus a large ammo stockpile is not necessary; adding a new caliber will not add a significant ammo expense. As much as I'd like a Blackhawk in .44 Magnum, I'd much rather save my money and get a Super Redhawk in .454 Casull. That will give me similar convertability as the .357 / .38, allowing me to also shoot .45LC, while also letting me shoot a round that's 50% more powerful than .44 Magnum. Same concept, just a lot bigger.

For rifles, I seem to have settled on .223 and 7.62x54R. I'd like a .308, but can't afford to add a new rifle and ammo type right now.

Right now in my very limited collection I dont actually share any calibers other than I have a .357 and a .38spl so I guess you can say I share .38spl.

However my "bug out/ teotwaswki/ tactical coolness" set up will be all in .40S&W with 1 kel-tec carbine, 1 M&P and possibly the new CARR if that works out if not I will be looking at a revolver with moon clips.

I have a couple other guns that I've never bought ammo for or are unsafe to shoot (like .32 rimfire) , so I'm not counting those.

I am focusing more on .38 and 9mm this shooting season to minimize some of the cost.

you have 3x more calibers than i do guns...

I shoot 45 acp, 1911 & SW 625. what does not feed in the 1911 goes in the revolver. 45 acp is easy to see the holes on your target. I live in the city and do not hunt. I also have a 22 conversion for the 1911. If I had to do it all over again I would go to 38/357 mag. revolvers and lever action rifle.

I reload all the center fire pistol and rifle. My friend reloads shotgun.

I shoot more 9mm and .45ACP than anything else, and out of 1911's for both the most.

I think one caliber is a good place to start. One additional caliber every 3-6 months for the first two years is a good way to get going.

I made that call about 10 years ago. I just got tired of having so many bullets, powders, cases, dies, etc., so I settled on .45 as my only pistol caliber.

That said, there are some real neat guns out there that are not .45 autos.

So even though I only shoot .45 I actually own guns in .40 S&W, 9X18, .32 acp, 7.62X25 and .22 RF. I really only take those out to teach beginners about different types of guns, but my wife has laid claim to my Kahr MK40 and won't let me sell it.

I sometimes carry a Mak or a CZ82 and always carry a .32 as a BUG. But, I don't shoot anything else enough to justify reloading.

I'm happy sticking to a dozen or so .45ACPs as shooters. I only buy two kinds of powder, one kind of primer and one kind of bullet.

Life is simpler now.

As far as bugging out, I'm too old to bug out. I'd rather just draw a line in the sand...

I have 2 that I shoot 22lr and .40sw. I have others I don't shoot, much. About 6 years ago I decided I really prefered .40sw to all the other sd handgun cartridges. Since then I haven't bought anything else for use. I still buy for the sake of collecting, but for handgun use I now stick to .40sw chamberings.

On Handguns i'm down to 3 calibers. 2-22lr's, 2-.38/.357, and 2-.45's. did have 9mm and .40 before, but decided to downsize.

On shotguns and long rifles. .22lr, .223/556, 6.5x55, 30/30, 7.62 Nato, 20 ga, 12 ga, .50BMG.

I would have to say that there is some real evidence behind using only the .40s&w, as it is a modern cartridge designed to pack the wallop of a .45 with something more like the speed and capacity of the 9mm. 45acp is an older cartridge that is now actually bigger than it needs to be given modern powders and their explosive capabilities. +P .45acp is really the only advantage to the .40 now; also the .40 is designed for anti-personnel and is sworn by for many who carry as part of their livelihood and self-protection. I wish it were easier to get +P .45acp as I don't reload and even regular .45acp is more expensive than .40s&w

wow, i did'nt expect as many 40s&w guy's i know it's a damn good rd especially because it splits the quality of both the 9mm and 45acp, the only reason i have not purchased one in 1911's yet, is my previous experience with it , it just packed a wallop to me as far as recoil and i tried it in several types of semi's at that, but if any body out there has a fullsize 1911 40s&w, how does the recoil feel in that platform as opposed to other semi's like polymers and such? reason i ask is my 9mm 1911's have almost non existant recoil compared to any other 9mm i've ever owned even my previous cz's.

I have several calibers, .22lr, .38 Special, 9mm, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP. I prefer the 45 and if I had to limit myself to one caliber, it would be the .45 ACP.
