On a new to me early charter arms undercover .38 I picked up I noticed a tiny rattling sound when I shake the gun(unloaded ofcourse) is this normal? I have a colt cobra and det. special that do the same thing,in thair case its the tranfer bar safety I hear. Did the old undercovers use a similar device,is this what I'am hearing?

The 2 Colts don't have a transfer bar (the firing pin is on the hammer). What you are hearing is most likely the hammer block. I believe the Undercover uses a similar hammer block which cold be causing the sound.

The cylinder release catch?

Try putting your thumb on the cylinder release catch and see if the rattling stops.

The Charter Arms don't have a transfer bar to make noise.

If that doesn't work take off the grips and see if there's anything loose under the handgrips.

Ummm, my earlier model (late 70s) Charter Undercover definitely has a transfer bar. But then it doesn't rattle when I shake it either.

Donp I took the grips off and theres nothing lose under there and holding the cylinder latch diddn't make the rattling noise stop either. I have a colt detective special from around 1994 that has a transfer bar safety and it rattles when you shake it,thats why I thought this might be the cause of what I heard? The gun passes all tthe funtion checks and I've even tried the trigger using snap caps so what gives?

The SF-VI which later became the DS-II was the first D-frame to have a transfer bar. They came out in 1995.
Is your firing pin on the hammer or in the frame?
