North to Alaska

Rep. Don Young attacked his fellow Republicans on the House floor Wednesday, as he defended education funds allocated to his home-state of Alaska.

"You want my money, my money," Young stridently declared before warning conservatives that, "Those who bite me will be bitten back."

Young took extreme exception to an amendment by Rep. Scott Garrett (R-N.J.) to strike money in a spending bill for native Alaskan and Hawaiian educational programs.

Conservatives have stoked the ire of their fellow Republicans for years by challenging federal spending, both broadly and on specific projects. But it's rare that their GOP colleagues express that displeasure openly on the floor.

During his brief tirade Wednesday, Young suggested Republicans lost their majority because Garrett, whom he did not specifically name, and others had challenged spending during the GOP's tenure. He also had disparaging things to say about the great state of New Jersey - home to The Sopranos and Bon Jovi.

And lest we forget, Young, who used to chair the House Transportation Committee, is responsible for the so-called "Bridge to Nowhere," a proposed span connecting Ketchikan, Alaska, with the tiny island of Gravina that would have cost $315 million – and eventually came to symbolize profligate spending under Republican rule.

Oh, and he has spent more than $250,000 on legal fees so far this year at the same time that federal investigators probe some of his campaign's biggest contributors.

Garrett refrained from asking for an official reprimand, but he and other conservative Republicans took after Young's declaration that the funds in question represented his money. The assembled conservatives then launched into a general attack on earmarked spending.

"We legally steal," argued Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-N.C.), defending her colleague from New Jersey.

Members of the conservative Republican Study Committee gave Garrett a standing ovation later in the day during the group's weekly meeting, an aide to one conservative member said.

NO!

I will not hear another word against New Jersey, home of Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes (the voice of my generation, sir.)

Lemme' 'splain ya the "Bridge to Nowhere" and the realities of AK.

I'll start by saying I'm not much of a fan of Don Young and I think it's time we put someone else in.

However, the Lower 48 has had a couple hundred years to build infrastructure. We've had less than a hundred. Our road system isn't even connected between regions due to distances and terrain.
Alaska became a state and didn't have the same chance at developement that the Lower 48 states had.

About 70% or more of our communities are accessible by air only year round. We have 226 communities scattered over an area 2 1/2 times the size of Texas. Everything from fuel to groceries to building materials to vehicles have to be shipped air or by barge during the four months of ice-free water if they are on the river system and it costs money.

The kids out here deserve just as good an education and opprtunities as Lower 48 pukes do. On top of it we have to put up with Lower 48 pukes who don't live here, have never been here and have no clue about life and economics here, trying to tell us how to live and develope OUR resources.:fire:

I would be more than happy for us to secede from the Lower 48, but since we have mineral, seafood and oil wealth, and that particular question was addressed over a 140 years ago at Appomatox Courthouse, y'all are stuck with us.:cuss:

Real nice. So all of us in the lower 48 are "pukes". Lovely.

Interesting that you complain that you have to put up with us "pukes" who don't live there (and strangely don't pay taxes there), have never been there (wouldn't mind going, but apparently the folks up there are really insecure and unfriendly to "pukes" so why bother), have no clue about life and economics there (you get subsidized because you have oil... and the fishing is pretty nice), and who tell you how to live and develop your resources (THEY ARE YOUR RESOURCES, NOT MINE... STOP WASTING MY TAX MONEY AND DEVELOP YOUR OWN ROADS AND BRIDGES, OTHERWISE START SENDING ME MY OIL SUBSIDIZED FREE MONEY).

Look, if you want to live in a semi-frozen wasteland because the fishing and hunting are good, don't complain that you don't have any roads. If you happen to like the rustic beauty and character of the state, that's fine, but don't you dare complain that it doesn't have enough roads and that you need federal dollars to build bridges that don't serve a significant number of people. If people want to live on an island so that they are sparated from the mainland, that's their choice. But if there are only 50 people on the island, then why the heck should we build a $350M bridge so they can get groceries whenever they want? They want to live on the island. Building a bridge there won't make a significant contribution to industry or commerce for the state. The return on investment would be absolutely minimal. Infrastructure is a good investment if it improves commerce in an area. Last time I checked, in the lower 48, when we build a major highway or a $$$ bridge, it is done to improve transportation along channels of significant interstate and intrastate commerce.

Why the heck do you think your entitled to take someone else's money because they have more than you do? If you don't like the fact that Alaska is a hunting and fishing paradise, with largely unspoiled albeit inaccesible wilderness, I suggest you move to the lower 48, and put on your "puke" hat.

Of course, if you want to secede from the Union, that would be fine too. You have oil, mineral wealth, etc. But you largely seem unable to get to it without PUKEY TAX DOLLARS FROM THE LOWER 48 PUKES BUILDING YOUR ROADS AND BRIDGES. Tell you what, you secede from the union, but pay the U.S.A. a toll everytime you travel by road, go over a bridge, or send your kids to school, and we'll call it even. Oh, also, you'll have to build your own military for when the Russians or Chinese invade to get your oil, mineral wealth, and seafood. But don't worry, I am sure they would be more than happy to build you roads, bridges and schools, right after they march to your capital, take away your guns and right to call anyone a "puke", and start telling you how to develop your resources amongst other things.

......as Lower 48 pukes do. On top of it we have to put up with Lower 48 pukes.......,
I would be more than happy for us to secede from the Lower 48....,

Well now, isn't that special! What do you suggest? Hmmm....,maybe Russia would want you!

I would have thought that someone who has 2863 posts on THR would be better than this.

Alaskans asking for taxpayer money is no different than the arrogant people of our major cities who expect the Federal government to fund their public transportation, or who expect the rest of us to pay for their police and fire protection. In part it is because we use phrases like "Federal funds", which obscures the reality that it really is my money and your money that we are talking about. I have no problem with paying taxes for the defense of the United States, or for the operation of the Federal government in areas that the constitution assigns to the Federal government, but I resent subsidizing day to day living for people who just don't want to pay for the services they "demand". However, I haven't figured out what this thread has to do with guns or the 2A and why it is on this forum.

FWIW, Alaska has many really beautiful places to go visit and enjoy. I've been three times, and everyone I've had the chance to interact with has been warm, friendly, and welcoming. Of course, I haven't met Wildalaska yet...

Oh, yeah... the flowers in the summer are friggin' awesome. That said, I'm amazed that a politician went on record as being against spending money...

Maybe he was one of the rare poll-iticians. You know, the ones with their wet finger raised to the wind.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his need.

Where do I remember seeing that before...?

Gimme a break. Does anyone think that conservatives invented pork?

If life in Alaska is so spread out and inhospitable, permaybehaps folks there should think about moving closer together as a kindness to those of us who apparently owe them something.

Signed,

A. Puke
