One Nice Rifle vs Two Decent Rifles

The .308 will do what the 30-06 can but in a shorter action...

Not necessarily in this case. He said he wanted 200 grain bullets, so I'm assuming he's after something big.

With each maxed out, the .308 almost matches the .30-06's ballistics with a standard 165 grain bullet. But not when you fill the case with lead instead of powder.:)

There's not enough difference between .30-06 and .308 to worry about a spacer or two rifles. Get one good one and one great scope.

I'm still finding it in bulk for half the price of 30-06,

Check CMP, I'm sure their M2 is cheaper than any .308 you'll find, anywhere.

Note that some random surplus ammo is not going to have the same POI as your favorite hunting round, either.

Didn't read the part about the 200 grainers... My main hunting rifle is a ruger m77 mkII left handed of course but it is a awesome hunting rifle and the 30-06 is a great round but what will the sole purpose of the rifle be for??? range time??? hunting??? the .308 is a nice do it all caliber but the 30-06 is as well ammo is a little more expensive unless you want to feed it surplus...

I've been thinking over the one pretty wife/two skanky girlfriends analogy. It doesn't quite work, as shooting two rifles at the same time is comparatively difficult. But I'll accept the analogy and say it would be more fun to rip off a banana clip each from two AKs at the same time than to slow fire a pretty little Remington 700 "when it's ready" and never leer at an AK with a folding stock, rubber grips and hi-cap dirty magazines again.

Your Highness, You are surely worthy of a response: although this will be the last.

The one wife/two skanky girlfriends comment was for nachosgrande, not you.

Every analogy breaks down at a certain point. It happens every time.

Get the better grade 30-06. Put as much money as possible into the scope. Down the road pickup a 'cheap' .243/.223......and a .300 win and a.....270 and a..........!

I'm still finding it in bulk for half the price of 30-06, unless you have a better source for non corroded ammo.

The CMP is selling 240 rounds of Greek milsurp .30-06 for $67, or 250 rounds of Lake City surplus .30-06 for $70. I think it's only 150 grain, not the 200+ grain you mentioned, but it's pretty cheap bulk ammo for shooting practice.

The CMP stuff is a great price, but the corrosion disclaimer at the top kinda scares me. Has anyone ordered from them and had a good experience with their ammo?

Would you rather have one pretty wife or two skanky girlfriends???
Definitely, two skanky girlfriends.

I tend to agree with Krochus - there is no such thing as cheap ammo anymore.
I see advertisements with guys selling off their remaining SA or Portugese ammo for two to five times as much as I paid for it back when I first started getting into guns. Nothing wrong with capitalism but it really makes me wish I'd worked a few more doubles and invested in a freaking pallet of Austrailian 7.62x51 back when I had the chance!

Anymore, I'm thinking that I'd be just as well served to sell off nearly everything I own and invest in two Finn M39's, 2K of Mosin ammo (including some reloadable stuff), and just call it a day.

How about a hot wife AND a skanky girlfriend??

Something like a Ruger Hawkeye and Mosin Nagant of some sort.

I've bought a case or 2 from them over the years, never had any problems.

And let's be honest here, corrosive primer compounds were in just about everything before 1952 or so.

All you have to do is modify your cleaning procedure slightly and be more diligent about it. It's not like it destroys guns.

And CMP has right now Lake City '06 for $280/1000

Lake City is all non-corrosive and very high quality.

Find quality .308 for 28 cents a round.

4 years ago you could, not today.

One nice beats two "decent" rifles all day long. Would you rather have one pretty wife or two skanky girlfriends???

Tough question. Skanks tend to put out. Pretty wives sometimes don't.

Now that's funny, right there! :D
