Hello everyone, I am interested in hearing what you all have to say about this question. If you could have only ONE revolver, which would it be and why? Thanks.

If I were limited to only one, it would have to be my 60-18, J frame .357, with a 5" barrel.

It will shoot any 38 Special or .357 load.

Heavy enough that it doesn't beat you up to shoot, like the lightweight guns, but light enough that it's easy to conceal IWB or carry in a holster as a trail gun.

The long barrel gives good velocity with 158 and 180 grain loads and it has a long sight radius, which makes for better accuracy with old eyes.

The fact that it's a 5-shooter doesn't even enter the picture. The speedloaders are smaller, too. I feed it with SpeedStrips, as well.

I've owned near 100 handguns so far, and I recently found my ideal:

Speed six with a 2 3/4" barrel. It's slightly beefier than a K frame magnum and has the bulk to soak up magnum recoil. It's a little longer than a snub and has more sight radius, but is still concealable. It breaks down very easily and has only a few parts. As with the whole Six line, it's built a reputation for toughness and reliability over the past decades. I don't know any other revolver that hits the balance as well.

It depends upon the purpose of the gun.

My choices would all be different for CCW, Range and Mountain guns.

CCW: S&W J frame .38 spl or a Ruger SP101 .357 Mag
Range: S&W 619, 620, 520, or 686 in .357 Mag
Mountain: S&W Model 29 Mountain gun in .44 Mag or a Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan in .44 Mag or 454 Casull.

Cosmoline,
Very nice revolver.... Did you just aquire it? How much did it run you?

I didn't mean to cheat, just wanted to give him good advice depending upon his need. lol

It took me years to find one for a reasonable price. That one set me back just two bills. Most owners are VERY reluctant to part with their speed sixes. Security sixes are easier to find, but their higher sights make smooth drawing from inside clothes more tricky.

Smith 624, 4"

It will do just about anything you could ever want a handgun to do. Handloading would be key to wringing out the most from the .44 special though.

Ruger old Army! :D
Makes your shooting fun... and if you really want to have the "do anything" revolver, get a conversion cylinder with it!

3" K frame or suitable substitute like my Taurus 66 or Cosmoline's Speed Six (excellent guns), though I would prefer a 3" (2 3/4", whatever) Security Six for the adjustable sights. A 3" K frame totes IWB much easier for me than a 4", just that added inch that gets in the way for some reason. You can do about all that needs to be done with a K frame .357. They're accurate, powerful, versatile, and easy enough to carry.

Runner up with be a 4" K frame. :D Old Armys are cool, too, but I have a CCW permit. I need something concealable. And most handgunners now days have never smelled the sweet smell of triple F. Their loss, eh?:D

One revolver huh? Tough call.
However, thinking back on all of 'em I've ever owned, the one that I actually got the most use out of was an old blued Ruger Single-Six convertible ( .22 lr/.22 mag) with a 6 1/2 inch barrel and adjustable sights.
That gun went every where with me, and handled every chore from plinking and target shooting all the way to "pest control" and, every now and then, CCW. ( Not ideal for that last bit, but sometimes ya gotta go with what ya got. )

So for me, if it comes to only one revolver... or possibly even only one handgun of any kind... one of these will do nicely:

And yeah, I know, it's crazy to pick a .22. But as I said, I know for a fact it's what I'd get the most mileage from. Especially with the fixed instead of adjustable sights.

J.C.

P.S. I should mention that this very gun is on my "must buy" list for after the first of the year.

Need to if this will be for SD, targets, hunting... No good answer without more input.

If the answer to those was D: All of the above, then you're in a world of hurt...

Maybe a 4" S&W M66 or 686 - That's about the biggest I like to ccw. If I were hungry, I'd be willing to try hunting deer out to 40-50 yds or so, and it will take small game w/ .38's. All of this hunting supposes that you are an excellent shot. As for target shooting, the short sight radius is a disadvantage, but the revolver is capable of much better accuracy than most shooters can exploit. It's the archer, not the bow, that counts.

It would be my custom S&W 65 which has a model 64 barrel installed, will do just about anything I need in a handgun.
I need to get some more pics mine are getting used.

Is it cheating to pick a Dan Wesson model 15 in 357 mag or a model 44 in 44 mag? With the interchangeable barrels and grips you can cover almost any application.

If I can't do that than a four inch medium frame 6 or 7 shot .357 magnum, e.g., model 19 or 586 S&W

Bill
