I'm fairly new here, (and new to firearms in general), and I'm sure this has been done in the past. I searched and didn't really come up with anything (maybe I suck at searching ). Anyway, I like hypotheticals, so I thought I'd give one a shot. I've seen threads about what caliber for a given situation, but I wanted to take it a step further.

Note: If you don't like the topic or think it's been done to death, just don't respond, that's what the "back" button is for. I'm hoping there's at least some people like myself who like to day dream about unlikely scenarios, and just need an outlet.

That being said, here's the question: If you could have one rifle and only one rifle for all situations (i.e. home defense, plinking, hunting, really, awful, nasty bad day, zombie uprising, sentient machine uprising, foriegn invasion, etc.) what would you choose, and in what caliber? Here's the catch... it can't be a black (re:evil), tacticool, hyper-combat, sniper-grenade launching, combat AR 6000. (please recognize extreme hyperbole)

There is an element of reality in this for me, as DW would never allow such weaponry into the home, and I am actually at least a little curious for my own preparedness' sake. Plus, there's just nothing like some good wood and steel. As for me, I currently have a Mosin-Nagant M28 that I imagine short of anything else, this would be able to fill some of the above niches, though not as well as some. You go with what you've got, I guess. I'm thinking what would be better might be something in a lever action like winchester in .30-30 as the rate of fire could be increased marginally over the Mosin for combat purposes, and would still be a sufficient hunting/survival caliber, with decent reach.

So, if you like to dream, let's talk. What would you own and why?

P.S. I apologize in advance if this is at all unclear. Let me know if I need to clarify.

Oh, for me, this is easy. Of the rifles I currently own, if I could only have one, it would be my Winchester Model 70 LH .30-06. If I could wave a magic wand and get a LH Model 70 in .308/7.62x51, then that's what I'd want. I'd also want the chamber to military specs for the 7.62x51mm cartridge.

The reason I didn't opt for a Savage .308 LH, mine are all black bolts. :)

A rifle for all occasions?

Get an AR lower receiver, and then several different caliber upper assemblies. That way you'll have one rifle to anything that comes up.

My MK14 Mod 1.
It's neither black nor tacticool and it fires a wide assortment of 7.62 x 51 NATO rounds.

I'd choose something like the 7-08, .280 (7mm Express) or the 7x57 because I'm a handloader. Additionally, anyone in your family can use the rifle in that caliber.

Elephants have been killed with a 7mm. I wouldn't recommend it because the event was probably accomplished by the skill of the hunter.

But it was done.

The OP said it can't be a black/tacticool rifle.

From what I own I would chose my Remington 7600 in .30-06. Its fast shooting and accurate.

A good disaster rifle should be strong and versatile. Practically any modern bolt action in a medium caliber will suffice, with a bit of preference for rifles with military pedigrees like the M98, M1903, or (especially good) 1914 or 1917.

Common ammunition is a bonus.

Given your criteria, I think I'd pick a lever. I have a Marlin 336. It's versatile and pretty. ;)

If I can pick a shotgun, that might be an option. Very versatile in that you can fire slugs or different kinds of shot. But maybe a shotgun isn't allowed in this exercise, eh?

I also have a Ruger M77 in .308 that I like alot. I don't have alot of experience with bolt actions, but I do like mine. It's simple to operate, not alot of parts, and I imagine that it wouldn't be to hard to figure out how to fix if it broke (at least easier than figuring out a lever action).

Amen, brother. ;)

The common ammo thing never really occurred to me. I guess it would be helpful if you could trade/share/pilfer ammo from others in a situation such as that.

Great responses so far... keep 'em coming.:)

I can't do it with just one. You really need a .22 for plinking, rabbits and squirrels. And then you need something bigger for everything else (well except really big game). A .243 is my choice. You could cover small game with a shotgun (not technically a rifle - but your mileage with your DW may vary) but nothing covers plinking like a .22 rifle.

Something like the Noveske Project Leonidas, but in Semi Auto.

Get it in OD green so it won't be so evil. And then you're good from CQB to several hundred yards (optics dependant) and are capable of hunting, SHTF, zombies, and anything in between.

j_charles,

No apologies required here -- I love these threads! :)

My personal choice for one SHTF centerfire long gun is an easy one... Since one is all I have. It's a Winchester Trapper in .357. Personally, I prefer handguns, and that's what I have in (over)abundance. I know it's limited in mag capacity, rate of fire, range, etc., etc., but on the plus side, I can shoot it at the local range 10 minutes from my home. Also, living in a heavily built-up area in the D.C. suburbs, I don't feel the need to reach out and touch someone beyond 50 yards.

(Of course, all this is subject to change were I to retire and move to Nevada or some such!)

Since you specify that a non-black rifle might be preferable, I'd certainly have you consider the various Winchesters, Marlins, Pumas, etc., in .30-30, .357, .44 mag, and .45 Colt.

You really need a .22 for plinking, rabbits and squirrels.

That's why I like the Hammond Game Getter. The Hammond is a standard cartridge case with a steel insert for the head. Instead of a primer pocket, it has a .22 chamber bored off-center, so the centerfire pin will set it off.

You load a buckshot of the appropriate size in the mouth and it mades a great squirrel cartridge. Mine is in .30-06.

Well since my big black beauty of a savage isn't allowed probably winnie 9422 in .22mag plenty of power to take down larger game with WELL PLACED shots that i am more than capable of making. As for being dependable come on its a winchester what more do I have to say :neener: it will last longer than you will.
If shotguns are allowed I'd have my mossi 500 12ga the loads and parts for a mossi 12ga are nearly limitless.

What percentage of hunting will be focused on varmints, on deer sized game, on elk sized game and/or on large sized dangerous game?

How important is the home defense aspect of this purchase to you? If it’s really important, I’d imagine you want something short, quick handling and handy like a lever action in .357 or .30-30. If home defense is a relatively small part of it, then maybe you’d be better off with a 24’ barreled .30-06, which would be a much better long range hunting rifle but not nearly as easy to wielded in your home.

How sensitive are you to felt recoil?

How skilled of a shooter are you?

How heavy of a firearm are you willing to carry (do you hunt from a tree stand 100 yards from your house or do you hike up and down mountains all day looking for game)?

Will you hand load or use factory ammo?

What’s the average distance you expect to shoot (50 yards in the forest or 350 yards across open plains)?

Without knowing the answer to these questions, I’d say it’s tough to beat a .30-06 and/or .270 as an all around cartridges. If you want a little less recoil, then 6.5x55 Swede, 7x57, 7mm-08 and .308 are good choices. If you'll focus mostly on varmints and deer-sized animals, .25-06 and .243 might be good choices. If you want a little more flexibility with respect to big game and you're not afraid of substantially more recoil, then maybe move up to .338 Winchester Magnum or even .375 H&H Magnum. Of course the .30-30 is also a great all-around cartridge, though it's a little less useful at longer ranges… which may be just fine depending on your expected use.

Lastly, if you’re going to be taking mostly varmints and small game at short distances and deer from inside 100 yards, you might even consider a shotgun (which is of course a solid home defense weapon as well).

Nice rifle :)

This is mine paire with a Ruger GP100

I would have to choose a Marlin rifle in 45 Long Colt and pair it with my S&W revolver in the same chambering.

Much as I enjoy my 405, the 45 LC would be a much better all around choice.
