One Year Later: The Long Range Peach House Gunfight

56 yards. I can do that shot! On a nice sunny day. Shooting at paper that can't shoot back. I don't know how I would do if my life was on the line. Great shots under pressure!

I must say that I also understand the police reaction & actions at the end.

Jim

Thanks for the report! That was some good reporting...the mainstream media should take some lessons from you.

I'm glad it ended without further innocent lives lost.

I don't know if it was ESP, but the second I read the first line of the post, I thought "well I bet it was a Colt Python." And sure enough.. . it was a Colt Python.

Vic Stacy visited sheriff’s officials and showed them the LaRue OBR (Optimized Battle Rifle), often referred to as a “sniper rifle,” Stacy received in Austin. Gov. Rick Perry presented the 7.62 mm rifle to Perry in recognition of Stacy’s action at the July 29 triple-fatality shooting at an RV park.

WHAT?!!! I didn't know this part.

The damn Governor... gave him a "sniper rifle".. as an award?

What in the hell am I still doing in this crappy state of Illinois... jeez.

Great story Dean. I love the look on Vic's face in the pic with his reward. He looks like a kid in a candy store.

One lesson I'm taking out of this is 'never bring a pistol to a rifle fight.'

I know this thread isn't S&T oriented but if I know I'm heading in to a lethal force incident (helping neighbor, whatever), I'm going to grab the best tool at hand.

(Sure the pistol did the job but there's no substitute for a scoped rifle putting a round through the base of the skull, to end a fight in a hurry)

But he did it with way more style w/the revolver. ;) WTG

We need to keep in mind he had no idea it was going to turn into a rifle fight. He wanted to be relatively inconspicious as he went to see what was going on. He only got involved as it turned into an issue of keeping the cop from being ambushed. I think that was a good idea, keeping a low profile until he knew what was going on, walking around with an AR when the cops showed up may not have been a good idea.

There were already shots fired by the time he left his trailer. Two people down, two dogs down.

I still would have grabbed the rifle.

Being inconspicuous may have it's advantages.

But there's something to be said for being armed to the teeth and ready for anything. If there were 2 (or 3) guys, that pistol would have been woefully insufficient.

When YOU KNOW you are heading towards a potential gunfight (shots were already fired), bring the biggest capacity boomstick you have. NOTHING will get you killed quicker than running out of ammunition early in a gun fight. (Look to that jeweler who was in multiple shootings out west, he damn near ran out of ammo the first time, when he only had a single revolver at hand. He then started using high capacity 9mm's.. which turned out to save him later, when multiple bad guys hit his shop again.)

A neighbor of mine experienced an armed home invasion from *5* armed intruders last year. If I get a call for help, I'm heading out the door with a PS90 and 50 rounds on tap. (Police response time here can range from a minimum of 20, to 30+ minutes.. we're kind of on our own)

Small, compact, and sufficient for any odds I'm (even remotely) likely to be able to survive.

(Pistols are great defensive pieces; don't get me wrong. But there's absolutely no substitute for a good rifle!!)

Nice to actually get to read about the happy ending for once. Good job!

We need a type of Pulitzer prize for real journalism involving firearms. The Parabellum Prize?

You are very kind. The lack of this sort of reporting was a real motivator for me to do the research and writing. I hope to do more.

If you read the linked article, he was clear he'd have grabbed the rifle if he'd have thought about it. Instead he just *acted*, ran out the door with the pistol. Hindsight, armchair quarterbacking, et al aside, good shoot on his part.

Ahhhh...I see.
The video interview linked in post 32 is where the "165 yards" comes from. The statement was made by Vic Stacy himself.

Well done, Mr. Weingarten.

I remember hearing about this and thinking, "well dang, 165 yards with a 6" python?!"

Awesome story, definitely appreciate the follow up!

And yeah, I'd like to see a Northeastern political figure award an OBR as well lol

Only in Texas does the Governor give a tricked out AR-10 and a case of ammo as a reward to an armed citizen who comes to the aide of a police officer.

In NY, MA or CA they probably would have thrown him in jail for some idiotic FOID card violation.

If Rick Perry runs for president, I'll vote for him.

It WAS a great shot -- or great SHOTS, as it took several to put the attacker down. We also don't know for sure whether it was STACY'S shots that put Conner out of action -- nobody was allowed to see the coroner's report. Stacy said he thought he hit Conner with 3 more shots, but that was not confirmed in the article or elsewhere. To quote the article:

"As Stacy went out the door of his trailer, he passed a scoped Bushmaster AR-15 with a loaded 30-round magazine. He later reflected on that fact and said that maybe he should have grabbed the rifle, but said that as it turned out, the pistol was sufficient."

I might have been tempted to grab BOTH weapons! Stacy was up against an attacker (Conner) with a scoped lever action rifle. CONNER also returned at least one shot at Stacy after being hit, and then turned his attention back to the police officer who had continued firing at Conner. Stacy was also very conscious of the fact that he had only 6 shots in his weapon, and no reloads.

The LEO was using an AR, and Conner apparently considered him a greater threat. Stacy's initial hit to Conner's thigh clearly did NOT put him out of action, as he shot at STACY and continued to shoot at the LEO after being hit; STACY may have hit him several more times. I may have missed it, or the article doesn't mention whether any of the LEO shots hit Conner, or whether the LEO's shot actually put Conner down.

Had it been JUST STACY and CONNER, with CONNER focusing only on Stacy, and able to use the tree as cover from Stacy's shots, it might not have turned out so well. But, that is all conjecture, and hindsight is always 20/20.

Good for him, in any event.
