Open Carry Day

I've never carried openly before, but I am considering doing it if I go out and about over the weekend. One thing that makes me a little hesitant, though, is that I don't have a holster with any kind of retention system... and even though I know the chances are quite slim, I'm a little wary of someone potentially being able to grab my weapon.

Any thoughts from you folks that OC regularly?

Well if it bothers you that much you should just wear an empty holster. Personally i wouldn't worry about it. If anything I'd just keep it a little closer to the front of my body. I know plenty of people that OC occasionally with a non retention holster. They set it up as a cross draw and keep it closer to the front of their body.

It's up to you.

thx, I have an XD40 that I normally carry concealed in a Tucker Texas Heritage. I also have just a basic Uncle Mike's kydex paddle, with the adjustable tension screws.

abrink, it's not that I'm sitting around the house wringing my hands about this. It doesn't bother me that much. I figure it's probably like my nervousness when I started CCing... until I realized that even if the butt of my pistol made a giant bulge in my shirt, most people were too absorbed in their little world to notice. I figure my concerns about OC will go the same way.

Mostly, I was just looking to get some feedback from the folks who've done this regularly.

Do you know what is said, that I don't understand the problems most of you have. I see the cultural aspects of non-gun owners, and try to fight those perceptions, but many of you have real concerns when you go outside and O.C.

Her is how my day has gone so far:

As I was getting dressed, I put my XD on.
Fed the dog.
Went to the parade.
Went to a fast food.
Then I went to walmart.
Sportsman's Warehouse.
The gas station.

And have been O.C.ing the whole time. Not one comment, not even a noticeable derogatory look, just O.C.ing. I think it is a sad case for much of the country to have it necessary to have a discussion on lawful carry.

I carry today in celebration of my rights, and in protest of the infringements of yours.

misANthrope, you should be fine with the Uncle Mike's Kydex holster.

I used to OC with a Fobus very regularly. They work pretty good.

But you should get a Serpa or other retention type if you decide you want to OC regularly. Very good retention and a very natural draw stroke.

Hope this helps.

Gonna do my first full day of OC today! Attending the town parade may be interesting. I am also "armed" with Washington State gun rights pamphlets, and my cop friend's assurance the local PD understands OC legality.

I asked the Sheriff's office in Yancey County NC. I was told that you have to have a CCW permit even to OPEN carry there, but if so you can pretty well carry one anywhere you can CCW.

Seemed a bit odd - but if some places can (and do) outlaw it, I reckon other places can put a restriction like that on it. No skin off my back anyway as I have my permit - and am still not SURE if I'm gonna do it....

BTW - I worked today so didn't get a chance to see many people. Though where I work isn't posted, someone COULD have come by. But it was REALLY slow today due to the holiday anyway...

I salute those who are participating in OC'ing this holiday. I would if I could, but I'm out in the Missile Field starting today until Monday so I can't.

Well I wore my Blackhawk around the downtown arts & crafts street fair and to the convenience store. Didn't see anybody else open carrying, but it didn't seem like anybody saw me either - same as always.

Well, it wasn't much, but I made a grocery store run a bit ago with the XD on my hip. I don't think I've been that nervous since my first date, but it didn't take long before I realized that, like I thought, either nobody noticed or nobody cared. I stood and chatted with the guys working the checkout for a minute, and if they noticed, they didn't give any sign of it.

I don't see OC as something I'm going to do on a regular basis, but it's kind of nice to have popped that cherry now.

Well even though not many people did it I'm happy it gave someone a chance to experience the world of OC. Well I guess we can say that not nearly enough people participated in it to be any kind of a "step" in the gun rights battle. Oh well. It was worth a try. Maybe we'll try to organize a really big event next year.

OC'd all day, as usual, watched the fireworks here in Lehi Ut. My wife and my friend also OC'd. No problems as usual.

Day 1 report from TX:

OC not legal.

Wore my holster today to and from the range, in and out of a couple gas stations, and while doing some grocery shopping.

Nobody batted an eye.

Will continue mission all week end.

Joe out...

:D

Anyone from I.F.?

O.C. all day. Me and my buddy, that is it. I was out side, in Idaho Falls, all day, but didn't see anyone else O.C.ing. Had a leo looking out of the corner of his eye. A group of troopers didn't act like they even noticed.
