WOW an unbiased gun article from the media, I thought this was the U.S. where am I?

Outstanding! I am amazed at the objective coverage.

I encourage everyone to post your opinions in the online comments section, and provide some positive reinforcement to both the reporter and the editor for this article.

Travis White, 19, who has ear and chin piercings, congratulated Brandon Trask, 21, on carrying openly for the first time that night. "Just wait until you get confronted by a cop," White said. "It'll make you feel brave."

I understand what he is saying, but to the uninformed it is going to sound like an armed stand-off.

Very good article.

after reading some of the responces there are some really whacked folks out there. If you dont want to exercise your rights thats just fine with me but why get angery about those folks that do want to exercise their rights? I do not understand. I dont get angery with them because they vote.

It's interesting that these same individuals would stand against ethnic racism, but don't mind being "gun racists" themselves. :fire: Why can't people worry about themselves and quit trying to interfer with everyone else's business. Just see what they would do if their freedom of speech were taken away.
(wish I could be more articulate with what I am trying to say.)

I do believe I will try to leave a logical comment on that site.

2. Insanity, low self-esteem and fear are the drivers here. Who needs to carry a gun to go to Starbucks?!? If that's what it takes to get you out of the house, you have serious problems. The last thing our society needs is a bunch of paranoids walking around looking for a fight.

I wish I could email this idiot!:cuss: And the last thing we need is a bunch of paranoids walking around pointing and yelling GUN!

Wow, a good, objective review of something happening related to firearms. And from the media? I don't buy it.

There sure are some ignorant morons posting comments, though. Makes you wonder how they make it out of their beds in the morning being that dense. Thanks to the liberal media no doubt, brainwashing them into thinking the only thing you need a gun for is mowing down rooms of people.

Makes me sick.

Nice story, I posted my support for the editor and open carry.

I hope he continues.

Overall, decent article.

It would have been nice since it was LA times for them to mention at least a little about Californias' laws so the people that live there could catch a glimpse of what they are missing out on.

Here's what I wrote to the reporter and the editor:

Dear Editor and Mr. Riccardi:

I am writing to applaud Mr. Riccardi's June 7, 2008 article Packing in public: Gun owners tired of hiding their weapons embrace 'open carry'. As a former resident of Los Angeles, it was very refreshing to see unbiased and objective coverage of the Second Amendment in a major publication such as the LA Times.

Regardless of one's interpretation of the Second Amendment, one fact can not be denied: In states that allow concealed and/or open carry of firearms by the law-abiding public, crime rates go down. No duels in the street or vigilante shootouts, just safer communities.

California law does allow open carry, but only in the most rural counties. In urban California counties, open carry is prohibited by statute. Concealed carry permits, technically available at the discretion of local Chiefs of Police and Sheriffs, are categorically denied in California cities. Urban Californians are also subject to some of the nation's highest crime rates.

Overall, residents of California are constrained by some of the most restrictive gun laws in the nation, and are also subject to some of the highest crime rates. Maybe it is time for California's lawmakers to realize that additional draconion legislation only relegates the law-abiding public to victim status. Maybe it is time for Californians to demand they be allowed to defend themselves.

Again, thank you for the unbiased coverage.

Wow! I never realized how irrational the liberal anti-gun mindset is.

My personal favorite quote from a fellow named Don:

"I'd say the desire to carry a gun is clear evidence that you shouldn't be near one!" :what:

Again, all I can say is WOW!

<><Peace

I gotta say, though, reading some of those comments really makes me feel inteligent. I mean I'm a fairly smart person, but reading those makes me feel like a genius in comparison. Some people are so out of touch with reality it's just flat out sad.

But what if the media had gotten to me like that? I shudder at the thought.

With the beat down that criminals give there(in California), I find the comments stunning!

You are so correct.I used to live there.
Try to get through South Central L.A. on a Friday or Saturday night without a gunfight.
And Nate C., a fine professional job on that letter to the L.A.Times.

Some people are so out of touch with reality it's just flat out sad

between LA the state and LA the city, realitys are drasticly diffrent. Not saying I agree with thier statements or even understand them. They have just as much right to thier "IMO" as we do.

Nate C.,
California law does allow open carry, but only in the most rural counties. In urban California counties, open carry is prohibited by statute.

NOT TRUE. As the article points out. Open carry is legal everywhere in CA. The difference is open loaded and open unloaded. Even in Down Town Los Angels or San Francisco Open Unloaded Carry is legal when not within 1,000 ft. of a school.

Great Article. Very surprised it was on the front page.

I for one will be inviting the reporter to the local range

Great letter to the L.A. times Nate C.

I've had my carry premit for 5-6 years and literally LIVE WITH my sidearm. I choose to conceal it even though Minnesota law allows open carry. I prefer not to be so visual with my weapon. It's there if I need it and no one else needs to know that I have it. Surprise is 90% of winning a battle.

If some folks wish to open carry to de-sensitize the public then more power to them. I choose not to.
