OPEN CARRY Front pages of LA Times

I wrote the reporter, with a basic note of "Thanks for not casting us as loonies."

C'mon guys, give the guy a note of thanks, if nothing else. Show him that we appreciate the fact that we aren't portrayed as loons in his article.

I left a comment, too, which I also thought was #72, but it hasn't come up yet after nearly 45 minutes. They are moderating the comments.

My post was very calm, reasoned and respectful, but I have no idea if it will make it through the moderating process.

I weighed in a few minutes ago with ,I hope, was a reasoned, low key comment, and thanked the reporter Mr.Riccardi for his fine, balanced work on this article.
It's a major step for the L.A.Times to put out such a lengthy, objective piece on a such a volatile subject on their front page.
Perhaps with Heller looming, corners are being turned. Here's hoping.

Hoplophobia; (pronounced [:what:]); from the Greek hoplon, or weapon, is defined as the "fear of firearms" [1] or alternatively, a fear of weapons in general, and describes a specific phobia.

I learned a new word today. TY ;)

Interesting. Where I grew up in NH, it was not unusual to see open carry. That has about disappeared these days however.

While I respect and see the validity of arguments for concealed carry, I do not approve. I believe that if one is armed it should be done openly, and everyone nearby should know that. Historically, that has been the case until the phase within Europe of sword canes, etc. Carrying a concealed weapon was usually associated with a criminal.

Someone brought up Heller. My wish is that the court not only recognizes the right of the individual to defend himself at home with a pistol, but to "bear" it in public, as long as it is openly visible.

no need to fix it since that is not what we are talking about in this thread.
There is no fundamental difference between self defense and your skin color. You were born with the right to carry both with you to town, to carry both with you proudly wherever you go, and any man who is bothered by your display them is the one that may be faulted. Not you.

Wow the anti-gun crowd is viciously irrational!

I suggest everyone here post a pro-gun comment on the board. It's easy and no username is required.

They have aparently stopped printing the comments sent in. The number was at 71 last night, and there is no change today. Mahaps they were getting too many pro and not enough of what they wanted.

My most charitable thought is that the person who is responsible for moderating the comments may have gone home by 10:00 pm PST, and the subsequent comments were posted after that. It would be reasonable that they wouldn't be back at work until perhaps 8:00 am, so I am waiting patiently for my comments and the rest of the comments by the posters here to appear. If nothing happens in the next few hours, then it will be clear that what is going on is not moderation to avoid spam and illegal threats, but rather censorship and spin.

It was a cool article, however, that thing on his hip on the front photo is certainly not a "Colt Pistol".....or is it just me?

Might be one of them "revolver" thingies we hear so much about....

As to the moronic comments, that's a sign of the times. Just watch any Youtube video and look at the comments. Most people are morons.

The guy at the starbucks. It looks like a black powder gun. I have 4 of them the holster looks just like the one for my walker.

For those that say people who carry a gun for protection are just "paranoid" or "nuts" consider this:

-2004 National average violent crime per capita 4 per 1000 people (SOURCE - Bureau of Justice Statistics)

-2003-2005 National average of passenger vehicle insurance theft losses 2.6 per 1000 vehicles (SOURCE - Highway Loss Data Institute)

You are almost twice as likely to be victim of a violent crime, than you are to have your car stolen.

By your own logic, doesn't that make you paranoid and nuts to have theft insurance.

Everyone keep them coming!

Left a comment. It's still stuck at 71, and it's 1:35 by PST. I wonder if they have a cutoff for comments, or just aren't posting any more?

In rebuttal: Who the hell would want to walk around openly displaying an unloaded gun, though?

1) How many criminals would realize that?

2) Is it better to have a handgun unloaded with a mag in a mag holder or to have no gun and at all?

as a CA resident, I'm not happy about it, but you take what you can while you work to change things so we have our rights restored.

For those that think open carry makes you look like a nut and or hurts 'the cause" the same argument can be made for being openly gay. Tattoos? a ethnic minority moving into an all white neighborhood ect.

Back in the day many southerners used to say things like I don't mind coloreds as long as they keep to themselves and their own part of town. should a black person avoid moving into a white neighborhood so as to not upset the status quo or should he exercise his rights as a free American?

By saying open carry makes one look nuts you are guilty of irrational discrimination and bias.

My letter, I doubt it will get printed, too long

Many of us gun owners are not gun enthusiasts, to people like me, the gun is a tool and no more. In the urban setting it is a deterent to evil, in the non-urban setting it is both a protection against wild critters whose land we have encroached, and doubly serves as a manner to feed my family should the need arise or present itself. Hiking in the deserts and forests, I come upon meth-labs and other illegal activity, in the towns and cities I have a weapon to protect myself as I walk into my empty house, or to convince a car load of gangbangers to seek easier targets for their random violence.
I have carried a weapon either fully concealed or openly since I was 17, that is, for almost 30 years. In that time I have defended more than one person just by my presence and the courage of knowing that I was appropriately able to defend myself. Rarely did I have to display my gun, in fact, I only recall one instance in which I found it necessary to display my weapon, when a woman ran into my Grandma’s house followed closely by her out-of-control husband, he was in his thirties and I was in my late teens, but what stopped him and calmed him down immediately was my Grandpa's Colt .45 tucked in my belt, and it stayed in my belt.
Guns are tools, no more, no less. There are far too many guns in he streets to start a ban now, for only the law-abiding will abide by a gun-ban law. Instead of acting like Ostrich’s, we need to confront reality, and there is no case more real than the sight of a law-abiding well-armed citizen to make some Bandito have a change of heart, for proof, please find me the case of someone being robbed at a gun range or gun show, and for God's sake, if guns were so dangerous, why aren't the gun shows littered with bodies like they are at the "No Gun Zones" we find like at Virginia Tech and Columbine?
I think the story was well written and I commend this paper for being brave to show us what the First Amendment is really about. Thank you L.A TIMES.

what would happen to you if they did? openly carrying a empty firearm is the worst thing I can think of to do. not only are people going to look at the gun, if the notice that it is unloaded, its like walking around flashing your bank roll around.
