Open carry, if its legal for you...

Open carry is legal with a Handgun Permit here. It is not recommended. I agree with that recommendation in urban areas unless you are a cop. Carrying a loaded handgun in a car/truck is illegal here unless you have the permit.

After reading about a hundred different threads about guys who insist on open carry everywhere they can because it is their right, I'm convinced there's more to it in their mind than just an exercise of their second ammendment rights. I suggest to those who are rabid about open carry everywhere, that they hang a set of trailer-hitch nuts from their belt buckle when they open carry. This will complete the picture and trailer-hitch nuts are protected under the first ammendment. That way they can shove two ammendments of the bill of rights down peoples throats at the same time.

Open carry is legal with a permit here in Connecticut but not all the police know that and they will arrest you for "disturbing the peace" or some other bs charge that will be thrown out in court. The problem is your permit is lifted and you must go through a nightmare process to get it back. Not worth the trouble in my opinion.

Open carry is legal here but not recommended. Unless I'm just walking around the house or in the backyard or checking the mail, I keep it covered. I support anyone that chooses to do it, but I prefer to avoid the hassles and the weird looks.

I get no questions, just a 2 second look and then nothing. Its GA, its almost expected.

How about this analogy: I enjoy my First Amendment right to free speech, but I don't think it's appropriate to be continually spouting off my opinions everywhere at any time. There is a time and place where it's good to make my ideas known to others, and there are times when it's best to keep my opinions to myself. I don't think that diminishes my ability to exercise my rights.

It's not legal here (neither is CCW), but even if it were I wouldn't OC anywhere other than in the hunting field. In my opinion it isn't the way you depict responsible gun ownership to the general public.

And yes, I do CCW - just about monthly when I travel out of state. I have a FL nonres.

Here in Tennessee, we have a Handgun Carry Permit, which allows you to carry open or concealed. Besides cops I know and hunters, I think I've only seen open carry once, and that guy looked as if he had his Ruger as a fashion accessory.

Personally, I don't like to draw attention to myself, but if you want to show the world what you've got, knock yourself out, I won't complain.

Confused.. why do many call it a CWP when in fact I thought it was a CWL Concealed Weapons LICENSE>>not a permit..

It depends on where you live. In Pennsylvania its called a License to Carry Firearms (LTCF)

Many different people refer to it as many different things, correctly or not, relative to their locations ...
CHP = Concealed Handgun Permit
CHL = Concealed Handgun License
CCW = Carry Concealed Weapon
etc ...

In Virginia, the card currently reads, "Permit to Carry a Concealed Handgun"
I found one of my old permits and in 1976 the Virginia permit read, "permission is hereby granted to carry a concealed weapon" ...

... so I suppose that now, in VA, it is a CHP while in '76 it was a CWP.

BTW, my New Hampshire card says that it is a "Pistol/Revolver License" and right under that is a "Permit #" ... :)

here in florida open carry is NOT LEGAL but i have a Florida "CONCEALED WEAPON OR FIREARM LICENSE" and i carry as much as i can and open carry on my property and a neighbors too...

It will be legal for me soon when I move from FL to MN in 2 and 1/2 weeks and get my permit ASAP. I probably won't OC though to avoid being hassled in the Twin Cities. I don't like the fact that it's illegal down here in FL, but at the same time, even if it was legal, I'd probably not take advantage of it.

I don't care what you cry about your rights or what you think you should be able to do. If you walk around with an exposed firearm PEOPLE ARE GOING TO FREAK!!!!!!!!!! READ THE NEWS!!! WE ARE NOT ACCEPTED as WARM AND FUZZY!! Even conservatives do not want to see GUNSLINGERS on the streets!
Put your damn gun away and enjoy the good life we have in AMERICA.

I don't care if you live in a small town or New York City. If you carry an exposed gun you are going to scare the crap out of the average person. The average person does not carry a gun. Even when a good citizen uses his weapon to foil a crime they are scrutinized by the news media as GUN NUTS! If you want to walk around like Jessy James then go ahead but DON"T link ME with you!

Seriously, relax :D I've spent some time in Arizona where it's not uncommon to see someone open carrying. No one freaks out when they see it :p

That's an excellent and thoughtful way to put it. :)

I have... ahem... a "North Carolina Concealed Handgun Permit" (I just looked at it to check the verbage), and I CC always, a 442 in my pocket, but also can open carry legally here in NC, and do, around the farm, a Judge, (yeah, I know... but 2 .410 and three .45 hollowpoints, plus two speedstrips w/ 12 more hollowpoints seem the most appropriate for the likely quarry of the occasional copperhead or rabid coyote/skunk/racoon... So in my circumstances it seems like the best choice for me for most of the time here on the ponderosa, and the round butt doesn't tear a hole in tractor seats with strong-side-carry), and the 442 is still in my pocket too. If I'm going to be going into deep woods, I switch out the Judge for a S&W .40 with an extra mag.

That said, I take either OC option off my hip to go to one of the convenience stores up on the main highway, ( but the 442 is still in my pocket...) The local LEOs wouldn't bat an eye at my OC... I just see no need to freak-out nervous civilians, and feel no need to push my "rights" into anyone's face.

Anyone remember the old joke about the difference in how the the "old bull" and the "young bull" approach the cows? :D

And don't link your freedom hating self with me, bigot.

w It's legal in N.C. don't even need a permit as long as you can legally buy. I however would not do it because of all the stares and hassels, etc. So unless it was an event where a bunch of guys were going to get together and do it as a unity thing I just wouldn't do it.People in this area would spaz out.

I live in Pottstown Pa. There is a big drug problem here. It is migrating from the Philadelphia area. We do not have the right to carry open but can carry concealed with a permit. If I carry open I will lose my right to carry concealed. This is stated when you apply for your permit. This I can understand. I don't know how it is out west, or south but I am surrounded by Liberals. They do not like guns and are looking for any excuse to confiscate them.

BANEK, you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. If you were to ever get the nerve up to OC, you would quickly find out that 90% of people don't even notice. Of the remaining 10%, most don't care one way or the other or are supportive. Very few react negatively.

I OC in Richmond, VA (yes, in a city!) about 95% of the time. I have had one semi-negative experience, and countless positive ones. No one FREAKED, the one person that disapproved simply said they didn't think carrying a firearm was necessary.

Take a look at my Friend or Foe tool (in my sig), and search VA for businesses that are pro and anti gun. There are about 275+ in VA already rated, and the vast majority are pro gun and welcome OCers. Even NOVA, which is less accepting of firearms in general has tons of OC friendly businesses.

My visible firearm helped avoid a confrontation in a parking lot once, so I'm satisfied with letting others know I'm prepared to defend myself.

You are 100% WRONG.

WRONG WRONG WRONG

Firearms laws in PA are governed by the Unified Firearms Act. There are NO (legal) local ordinances against carrying in any fashion. In fact, there are people in Pottstown who open carry.

It's 100% legal to open carry anywhere in PA, EVEN in Philly (Provided you have an LTCF there), and there are people doing it in Philly, too.

You need to learn the laws before you continue to carry a gun, for the benefit of everyone around you.
