What's your opinion on a Marlin 3364 lever action rifle 30-30 Winchester 16.25" barrel 5 rounds? I'm thinking that's a very short rifle barrel at 16.25" myself.

Well....I love Marlin 336's. They are stout, handy, accurate, and reliable. I have a 16.5 in LTS and it is one of my favorites. I have not played with any of the Remington made Marlins as they have too many horror stories attached to them. I was thinking of picking up a 336Y for a truck gun and then Ruger announced the 7.62x39 American Ranch. I picked one of those up instead and could not be happier. I don't have to risk getting one of my JM Marlins stolen, it is very accurate and thus far 100% reliable. It eats up the steel case ammo with no problems and has made me want to start reloading for the 7.62x39 to discover this rifle's true potential. The only thing missing is iron sights, but my eyes are slowly giving up on me, so that is really becoming a moot point. I know they are two different things, but you might want to consider one if you can't find a good JM Marlin.

Never heard of that model. 16" isn't really that short for a 30-30. One thing I can tell you is the old ones sure look a heck of a lot nicer than the new ones.

I have a newer 336Y with a Weaver scope. I can blow up 2 liter bottles at 100 yards easily. I like it a lot.

I've been interested in that model also. I have 5, 30-30s. 2 Marlins, 2 Winchesters and a Stevens 325 b/a. My shortest one is the Win 16 1/2" AE Trapper from the 80s almost new. I don't want that as a truck gun. Worth too much. The hardwood 336Y model seems like a good one. I use a 150grn close to 2000fps cast boolit load for all of them for plinking.

Never heard of 3364 either and think that may be a typo.

The Maurader was made with 16" barrels back in the 50's and 60's. I've seen several of them over the years. I have a 16" LTS. Those were very similar to the Maurader but with only about 2500 made during parts of 1988-89. I don't know numbers on Mauraders, but I've seen 3-4 over the years. Both have straight grip stocks. My LTS is the only one I've seen in person. More recently they are making the 336Y with 16" barrel and a shorter pistol gripped youth stock.

If a short handy rifle is needed they are the ticket. Still on the heavy side, but I'd not be overly concerned about velocity loss from a 30-30.

I much prefer the "standard" 20" barrel to anything much shorter. The Winchester Model 94 carbine with the 20" barrel set the standard for a fast handling rifle in heavy cover and doesn't bring with it the louder muzzle blast associated with shorter barrels. Though not especially meaningful in practical terms, abbreviated barrels must shed some velocity when shrinking in length.

The 1894 CARBINE ,"made it's mark" with a 20" barrel. The shorter barrels like 16-14" were "trapper" models and very rare.

I have one in 16" with a straight grip. Super light and handy. Not as stable as my 20" for offhand shooting. The balance seems a little stock heavy.

LOVE my 336Y in .30-30 that I put a thicker recoil pad on to increase the LOP. You don't need a longer barrel. Lighter is better. I load soft point bullets for it too - no problems (165s). Marlin has fixed the QC problems as of about 2-2.5 years ago, but beware used ones from the pre-2015 / post-Remlin era.
