I have a couple of brasser .44's & .36 that I want to do something with. I have started some de-farbing and am thinking about cutting the barrel to 2.5" and re-contour the barrel shroud area. Any thoughts?

This is about as far I care to go with power tools. I well hand finish the radius were the loading lever was and cut the barrel, if I can make up my mind if I want 2.5 or 3 inches.

There was a test question in the current Guns&Ammo re what such guns were called in the olde West.

Correct answer was Mormon Avenger.

Appearently they were carried by Orrin Parker Rockwell, early church member, body guard, deputy Marshall, etc.

The Wikipedia entry for his name is interesting.

Got to go to a Preisthood meeting right now so later....

looks nice so far!

Of ourse...if you Bob the Hammer all-the-way, on a Single Action...then, it becomes much safer were a BG ever to get it away from you.
( Lol...)

Lookin' good!

Looks great.

I noted in the first picture the barrel is marked .36 and the cylinder not rebated. What with the round barrel and brass frame was this some sort of CSA repro?

It's a forty year old Uberti reb .36. I guess I had .44 in the title, I was thinking.44 and grabed the .36, too many projects. I want to do a barrelless belly gun with a .44.

I have a Pietta 1851 "Reb" brasser in .44 I was thinking about doing this to. Thanks Madcratebuilder for laying the procedure out for us all to use as a guideline.

I have never tried to reshape cast brass before. I assume I well need to anneal it and I'm out of oxygen. I well have to swap tanks this week. I thought about cutting and gas welding the back strap but I'm sure I would get a different color at the weld.

Thinking about cutting off the front of the trigger guard.

Thank for very inspiring project . Can you show the picture of your recrown tool ? I want to get one done for many years but the recrowning part is the one that stop my project .

Sandy4570, The best recrowning tool I've found is an RCBS hand held neck reamer. Looks like a little space ship...need a pic?

Madcratebuilder, that's just a mad cool snubbie! What method did you use to cut the barrel off? You did a heck of a nice job with it.

What method did you use to cut the barrel off?

I have one of those cheap Horrible Freight metal band saws. Use a bi-metal blade and a few modifications to the saw, you can get them to cut within .010 over four inches. Barrel cuts are rough but square. I dress the end with a disc sander and use a large brass headed stove bolt (round head) with valve grinding compound to do the crown cut. I only cut about .010-.015, don't need much at all. You could leave a flat cut, just be sure there are no burrs at the lands and grooves on the edge.

very nice! i agree with slightly bobbing the hammer, and the grip definitely needs downsizing. have you shot it yet? if so, how's the accuracy?

Mormon Avenger
Avenging Angel
Angel of Death
Destroying Angel
Natchez Special

I have read all five referring to period belly guns.

What with my horrible spelling and typos and lack of spell check use, I shouldn't say anything, but.....

What is the Angle of Death?

180 degrees?

Made me think about doing the Dying Cockroach over looking the Ashley River in Charleston SC many long years ago.

Now since we all know I'll never get around to cutting up a brass frame (Remember I wrote and thought about it shortly after joining THR, still haven't) Let me suggest a front sight made of some small coin, low round and non-snagging.

That's one case spell check fails you. You should see em before I correct them.

Thanks for the great idea! A old 1860's dime, well worn, leave just enough on the sides so you knew it was a dime at one time.
