In the next month or two I'm planning on upgrading a few scopes.

I carried my AR15 in 7.62x39 this year for deer season and I really liked it. Short, handy and I dont have to worry about banging it around. It currently wears a cheap tasco world class 1.5-4.5x32 that I took a chance on. It works ok but now that I've decided how much I like the rifle I want to upgrade.

Overall I will use the rifle for hunting and for home defense, maybe for a three gun match or two if I want to try it out.

Wants in the new optic are 1-6 or 1-8 and lighted reticle (I've never had one and I think they are cool)

The woods I hunt are awful thick so low power is necessary and I'd like 6ish power on the top end for range trips

I've been doing a lot of research and I think I've decided on the Burris RT6. Any opinions on this scope? Any other alternatives i should check out?

I'll admit I'm biased towards burris because I love my fullfield ii, my dad has a vortex in the same price point and I think the burris is better

I have the 1-6 Vortex on an AR10 carbine and I am 100% satisfied with it. I may use it for deer in the brush this year.

I don't think you really need more than a 1-4X scope, but a 1-6X is close enough, having 1X, or 1.5X on the low end is the important part. I have a Vortex Strike Eagle 1-6X on one of my AR's and like it well enough. It does have a lighted reticle, but I seriously doubt it will ever be needed.

I have no experience with that Burris model, but think a lot of the FF-II. Just looking at the specs it appears VERY similar to my Vortex, including the type of reticle. I don't think it would be a bad choice if you really want those features. The Vortex is about $50 cheaper. But since I have no first hand experience with the Burris I can't say if it is worth the extra $50 or not. And you may be able to get it at a better price somewhere else.

On a hunting rifle I'd be tempted to just use a Leupold 1.5-4X20 scope. Price is $100 less than Vortex, $150 less than Burris, and it is 1/2 the weight, (9 ox vs 17 or 18 oz.). After having the lighted reticle I will never use it. And I just find conventional crosshairs easier to use. The weight difference is the biggest factor to me.

I looked through the vortex Strike Eagle 1-6 the other day, very quality clear glass. Reticle seemed a lil thick but other than that it felt like a very sturdy, rugged unit. It was actually a lil heavier than I imagined it would be. Not in a bad way, they look like they'll weigh nothing but it was just a very nice clear scope. I almost bought one many times but I wanted to actually see one before pulling the trigger. I think one may be in my future for my AR.

I got one for my AR, it is a little bulky but not overly so. I tried the 1-8x version in the store and it had a noticeable amount of a fishbowl effect which the 1-6x lacked. I was glad I waited to try before I bought. I'll be happy with the 1-6x.

I haven't tried the burris, but it has tempted me. It's liked a lot here https://www.ar15.com/forums/ar-15/Burris-RT6/18-722253/
I got to spend a couple days with a strike eagle and a primary arms 1-6x. They were basically equal optically and mechanically. I preferred the primary arms kiss reticle. I kept the lit reticle for pigs at night with a big flashlight, but otherwise, a vortex diamondback 1.5-5x was a lighter cheaper scope that looked about the same to my eyes.

If you decide you hate the rt6, I'll swap my primary arms 1-6x to you for it. ;)
