Collapsible vs. fixed stock.

As I figured, since I'm ordering tomorrow I keep looking at different options "just to make sure". This is what I'm set on:

Mid-length chrome lined barrel with A2 upper (no flat-top)
Standard handguards

The issue is the buttstock. I like the fixed stock (its what I used) but I also like some of the collapsible stock builds. This rifle WILL NOT be a turkish taxicab as I like clean, simple rifles.

Pros/Cons

Fixed pros
- simpler and more reliable
- trap door to carry items
- its what I'm use to

Fixed cons
- one length of pull
- less flexibility

Collapsible pros
- multiple lengths of pull
- multiple carry options

Collapsible cons
- more parts to break
- no trap door
- less sturdy

Why do you like the stock you went with?

My uneducated opinion is that if it's a HIGH quality collapsible, that's what you want. But a fixed is preferable to a low-quality collapsible, that might do stuff to you like collapse when you don't want it to.

If you are comfortable with the standard LOP on a standard fixed stock, why waste money on a collapsible? If you like the LOP, the only con by your list is carry options, which is probably minor.

My reasons behind my stock is that I like a long LOP when prone and a short LOP when standing. I also started with and trained with a collapsible one.

It sounds like this rifle will end up looking like the one you used so I voted fixed stock to keep that trend going.

I like the collapseable on my bushmaster M4 mainly because I'm pretty small (5'4" with short arms) and with it all the way collapsed, it's the most comfortable gun I have tried so far.Not that "regular" length stocks a UNcomfortable, or I cant shoot them just as well, I just find short stocked/LOP rifle MORE comfortable, handier, and easier for me to shoot well.

I prefer the fixed stock on all of my AR's with the exception of the M-4gery. That rifle is made for close range tight work so I like the collapsable stock.
It all boils down to what you are really going to use the rifle for.

I have never seen to point of using a collapsible stock. If a fixed stocks length of pull fits you then having it be adjustable is totally useless. I have seen guys shoot with their collapsible and miss because they forgot to extend the stock. The only reason for the M4 style stocks is to provide armor wearing LEO/military guys the ability to fit the stock to the gear they are wearing. Pointless on a civilian rifle.

I like the idea of collapsable stocks because they're more flexible... my short wife can adjust it to fit her, as can my kids. Also, the storage of them can be easier, depending on the situation. You can also put them in a shorter carry bag, making the case a little more managable.

Also, there are many, MANY, more sling attachment possibilities with a telescoping stock.

But what do I know? I live in CT, and we're not allowed to have those evil telescoping stocks.

I also live in Connecticut and face the same prediciment. While a carbine would definetely be handy, I would still prefer a 20" rifle, with a fixed stock any day of the week-even if I could own a telestock equipped carbine- better cheek weld, which is conducive to good shooting. The only pro to the telestock is adjustibility.

Except for people who live in areas where it gets real cold and you want to be able to wear your nice, thick, warm winter jacket, and adjust the stock.;) Never worn Mil body armor, but I'll bet a thick winter coat has the same effect, thus, thats a great use for an adjustable stock for civillians. also, great for those that share the rifle with several peole of different heights, or with different preferances for LOP, like Organdonor mentions. Seems far from useless to me.:D

I voted for fixed because you have experiance with it. The devil you know ....

Just put a Magpul PRS on my Bushie predator about a hour ago.

The length of pull fit better (longer), and can be spaced out even a bit more.

The cheekweld is far better than the original.

Now... if I can just find the time to shoot it.

Get a collapsible stock its an "evil feature" you might not be able to buy post Obama.
