I am getting ready to make my first online primer purchase (i'm a newbie). If i am understanding what I am reading from most people, Cabelas and graf & sons may split the orders up, but they only charge a 1 time hazmat fee, is that correct?

From what I hear they may trickle a box here, a box there to you so I think I may order a few 1000 to keep a stream slowly coming in.

it is my understanding that the haz mat fee is from ups, and appies to every order. i do not buy enough primers or powder at one time to make the haz mat fee worthwhile. if you are buying 20k @ a crack, it may be worthwhile. but for me, 3-1k boxes (different sizes) is a big primer purchase.

The haz-mat fee is charged PER SHIPMENT so if they are sending you 1 brick at a time you will pay $22.50 haz-mat plus shipping for each brick!!

The H-M fee is charged by UPS or FedEx because primers are classified as flammable solid and have to be handled separately. H_M is NOT shipping; you will pay that in addition to the H-M fee, and insurance.

Your absolute best bet is to order as many as you can at one time in order to have the hazmat fee applied once; you can get 50K primers or 50# of powder or a combination of the two (a 1000-brick of primers is equivalent to a pound of powder, ROUGHLY) in one shipment.
Typically for a 50K order you will pay $20 shipping, $22.50 in Haz-Mat, and $5-$10 in insurance. Roughly about $50 in shipping costs to get 50K primers to your door, or $1 a brick. By the same token, it also costs the same $50 to ship 5K of primers to your door, or $10 a brick, so it pays to max out the hazmat by getting your friends, relatives, club associates, neighbors, etc to go in with you to get hazmat stuff.

Before ordering from Cabelas or Midway you need to check out Powder Valley and Wideners and Grafs. They are the ones who usually have primers or powder and Cabelas, Midway, etc buy often from them (or some other distributor)and mark it up to you.
That's why if you order primers/powder plus a set of dies from Midway, you get charged shipping twice- Midway doesn't keep the hazmat stuff in stock, it comes from a distributor.

Order enough primers OR enough powder to stretch the hazmat out and make it monetarily feasible, or at least better. An 8 lb der, couple of 4 lb ders, or 5000/1000 primers, or 5 1 lb ders etc.....

Cabelas hazmat charge

I ordered primers and powder last month from Cabelas there was one $20. hazmat charge, the primers and powder were in seperate boxes on the same hazmat tag #. I would think that if they have your powder & primers both in stock as they did mine, your shipment will only have one hazmat charge.
That said, I have heard of other suppliers charging hazmat for each box of primers and each jug of powder.
Find out up front

I've placed several orders to powder valley and Widener's that included both primers and powder. They shipped in the same box and I paid one hazmat fee. Powder Valley charges reasonable shipping, all told with insurance and hazmat I want to say I was paying about $35 on top of the price if the powder and primers. That still made it cheaper than buying locally, and nothing I ordered can be found locally right now anyway.

I wouldn't order less than 5000 primers at once given the hazmat fee and shipping charges. I did order one case (5000) primers from Widener's not too long ago and my total cost was $135.00, $27/1000. Not great, but not too bad either considering the only local source for primers right now is $50/1000.

Midway powder and primer orders are filled from separate locations so they can't mix them in the same shipping box like most other places do. That's why they have a primer haz-mat charge and a separate powder haz-mat charge.

You have to be careful doing backorders on powder or primers. Every shipment has a haz-mat charge even if it is only half of your order.

order from powder valley and tell them to hold the stuff until they have everything in stock. unfortunately, they will not have varget until june or july. RG
