I want to make sure that I take care of my new AR and am bypassing my wally world special all purpose Outers gun cleaning kit. Is the OTIS system fairly safe and useful for cleaning my AR? Or should I go with just a boreguide and 1 piece rod and CLP?

The Otis is good at cleaning and it's safe. I use it for my M1, where the breech is inaccessible for a one-piece rod.

The one-piece rod is faster and easier. That's what I use for the AR. If you want to clean the AR without field stripping it, the Otis will work. But what does that save, ten seconds?

For walking in the field, the Otis is easy to throw in a pack or hang on a belt.

Either way, that's just for cleaning the bore. You still need brushes and solvents and rags for the rest of the bits. The AR generates a lot of black mess, with that gas system. Spray cans of brake cleaner help a lot.

Regards.

I use something similar, the boresnake. At around $7 its economical and quick. I also have one piece rods for the occasional "good" scrubbing. But for my chrome bore/chamber guns the boresnake is all i use.

Cleaning the barrel of an AR is much like that of any rifle. A rod or pull-through cleaner will work fine. The two other tools that I find really helpful are a chamber brush designed for ARs and a carbon scraper for the inside of the bolt carrier.
