After looking and looking and looking at ALL the myriad of rifle scopes, I am looking for something that isn't over the top expensive [$300.00 - $500.00] that would have good durability and work in daylight to low light situations [no night vision]. It would have to mount to the standard claw mount for the HK91. I was looking at the Springfield Armory scopes for the .308 and these tend to be closer to $600.00.

Something durable, decent...I would settle for less expensive. The claw mount would be the G3 Scope Mount by ARMS. These use Weaver rings?

I've owned both, the HK and the ARMS mounts. The ARMS is by far the more versitile mount. It returns to zero just as well as the more expensive HK mount. The problem with the HK is that you are limited to a scope, and where that scope is placed. The Germans for some reason seem to like their head way back on the stock, which I hate. I prefer my head forward on the stock, and if possible, have the eye relief the same as the iron sights. You can do this with the ARMS. My favorite scope for the HK's is the Beeman SS-3 air rifle scope. Its a real small 1.5x4 power scope that is rated for the .50BMG in full auto. I use it on my MP5 now that I got rid of my 91. Great little scopes if you can find them. They have their own base and require no rings. The other scope I've used and like is the Leupold 1.5x5. It to is fairly small, but is brighter and clearer. The Beeman is great for poping on and off and fits in a pocket.

You might look into an 8X56 scope with heavy picket (German #1, I think) reticule. I had one of those in Schmidt&Bender when I cleaned up the West Coast practical rifle competitions in 83-84. You could get a good Russian one to try from Kalinka Optical for $150 . They work well with 30mm tube on the factory H&K mount which I prefer for repeatability (I have 1 mount for HK93&91) , for 25 years! I have a 23 year old 1.75-6X42 in my mount for last 10 years it is the perfect optic for all around HK91 use.
