Overreacted or was he just an idiot?

I would vote "You dun good", everyone went about their business without
problem, you were aware, prepared and you should feel good about
that.

Treo,

Here we go again...:D Well, if they were and they meant me harm, I would "keep them talking" until I had a chance to escape.

I think you did fine.

That's the problem with situations like this. If nothing happens people will bill you as paranoid. Howerver, if you didn't take the steps you did and this guy DID mean you harm, he would have been all over you like white on rice and had the upper hand from the start.

I wouldn't say over reacted, but you were more ready for a bad situation if it were to arise. Truely you wouldnt have been overreacting unless you drew on him for lunging for the door. And yes, guys like that are idiots. He probably beats up old ladies for cutting him off on the street in his beater pickup!:D

I think you handled it perfectly.

Another tip, the only thing you should take to the ATM is your ATM card, your car keys and your gun. Leave the rest, your wallet and everything else locked in the car.

There have been 4 robberies at the ATM just off the Navy base here. I think it is because the perps know that persons coming directly off base probably won't have weapons because we are not permitted to defend ourselves on base.

When we lived in TN we used a bank that only had a walk up ATM. What was worse about this particular bank was it was at the entrance of the bank. You went through two doors and turned immediately left and there was the ATM. Accessing the bank itself required going through another set of doors.

This particular bank was isolated and the only nearby buildings was a liquor store next door and a mom and pop small general store. When you walked out at night there were shrubs and plants blocking your view and they had flood lights on the ground which shinned directly into your eyes upon exiting nearly blinding you to anything coming at you. I hated using that atm at night and used it only in emergencies with my hand on my pistol under concealment many times. Most of the time either I or my wife would watch in the car while the other went to the atm.

Glad we moved and changed banks although the new bank we started banking at is the only where I had to draw my pistol.

It was a sunday afternoon after church. My 6 yr. old son was in the back of the truck in his car seat at the time. It was sunny and mid-day and I pulled up to the atm to get some money for lunch. There was a car in front of me and I gave him a good car length of space to finish his transaction. He finished and I pulled up to use the machine.

Upon pulling up I looked around the truck and saw no one but as I put my card in the machine a young man caught my eye in the drivers side mirror, he turned quickly off the street side walk and headed straight for the truck at a quickened pace, not taking his eyes off the truck. It was mid June and HOT and he had a jacket on with one of his hands in the jacket which made things more suspicious. He was closing the distance rapidly so I reached into the glove box and pulled out a Bulgarian Mak, raising it up high enough for him to see me bringing it over to my lap and I dropped the safety off and prepared to verbally challenge him. Upon seeing the gun he immediately stopped looked straight down and did not move, he was about 10 feet from my rear bumper.

At that point the machine spit my money and card out and I quickly left. He still wasn't moving when I pulled out. Don't know if he was thinking of robbery or just being totally stupid at the atm.

I agree with those who said to find another way to get money. ATMs are watering holes for criminals - it gives them a location where there a victims who have money, and are distracted/occupied by using the ATM.

I prefer to use one in an establishment, and in a case like this (late at night, emergency) I'd actually accept the fee for using one inside a gas station or the like. Even a $5 fee is worth not having to worry about being attacked - and the best case after an attack is still going to have you detained.

I have to admit I feel kind of silly with all the suggestions on alternate ways to get money that are on this thread.

A while ago I started memorizing the ATM machine at the bank that I use. And now I operate it with my back to the machine, and facing the parking lot.

I imagine some of these suggestions would go a long way to making me appear less paranoid. :uhoh: :D
