P99 Question

I just picked up my new P99, all black, in 40 S&W. On disassembly I noted two things that I wanted to ask some people with a longer experience with the P99 about. I should note it is the Walther pistol, not the S&W or hybrid.

First, the guide rod is plastic and almost seems to "bend" when I reassemble the pistol and put it in place. It may just be the spring, it is one of those flat metal springs, that is making it look this way. Any guide rod or spring problems?

Second (and possibly related), the spring seems like it will rub against the inside of the frame just in front of the take down assembly. In fact this is in the area where the above noted "bend" was, and it seems that by lying against the frame the bend would actually be removed. Being that it is a flat-edged spring I wondered if I could expect any wear of the frame in this area.

All in all a beautiful piece. Can't wait to go shoot it. The barrel really seems to provide full support for the 40 cartridge, unlike another pistol I own.

I believe both these questions have been addressed over on the Walther Forums . There's a group buy thread over there for a stainless guide rod, as well as a discussion of the spring frame rub you've mentioned.
Not a real busy forum, but lots of good Walther info.

I've never had any trouble with my P99, guide rod or otherwise!! It just keeps going bang!!!

The P99's recoil rod is made of polymer, not plastic. Also, polymer is designed to flex. Once assembled, the rear of the recoil rod is flush against a flat on the frame, and thus doesn't remain slightly bent. As long as you install the recoil assembly correct, specifically that the rear portion is engaging the barrel as stated in its manual, you should experience no frame wear from the recoil spring.
