Painting a HS Precision Fiberglass Stock?

I'm redoing my Remington 700 rifle and I'd like to paint the HS precision stock that's on it. Can anyone recommend a type of paint would be best to use on this stock? The HS Precision stock is fiberglass, not molded plastic like cheaper stocks. I want to paint it a coyote brown color.

Any other advice?

I have had really good luck with Krylon Fusion cammo paints. I just painted the stock on my Rem LTR and it came out great. Very durable, no chips after some pretty hard use.

Walmart carries the paint around here as do most hardware stores.

Krylon is good, but I've heard that a bake on finnish is better. Search my thread "painting a Remington 700 bolt", and you might get alot of answers.

The thing about Krylon is that it is a very inexpensive paint. Your gun already has a good protective finish on it, so if you paint metal parts they don't need further protection. And your stock, being fiberglass, is already weatherproofed. All of my painted rifles do just fine, if they start looking scummy after a few years, I just buy another can or two of Krylon and go to town again!

^^^^^ that is SO true, that's why I like Krylon, btw, krylon IMHO is better than Rust-Oleum. I need to try out Brownnells "Aluminihide", has anyone here tried it out.

I used to be the painter at H-S Precision. The guns were tefloned, but as far as stocks go, just use Krylon. It does work great on the stocks. As far as someone baking a fiberglass stock......well, let me just say when I painted cars, Corvettes were never baked for a reason.....

Oh, my bad, I ment bakeing barrels, I'm sorry for the non-correct wording. I'm getting a HS thumbhole stock in the next two or three weeks, so, I'll let you know how it goes. I'll be using Krylon or Aluma-Hyde.

Unless they make Murderer (TM) brand "Woman-Killer Brown" paint, then it just won't look right.

Sorry, to me and many others like me on this board and elsewhere, that's akin to asking "which portrait of OJ Simpson should I paint on my rifle?", or worse really.

I agree with the HS jab...I used to have to handle the guns people would pay 2k and up for and be happy that they would pay me 9.00 an hour!!! The folks assembling em did not even get that!!!

It always does. But what good is it to bitch at the people who already own HS stuff? HS has seen their cut of your money. Tossing the stock out now does nothing to hurt HS. All you are doing is tossing your money away. I can see hating on new purchases but for a guy wanting to paint a stock he already own just leave it alone. I'm all for not buying new HS stuff and think their stance is crappy at best but why does every thread have to turn into "You're a murderer lover if you like HS" regardless of what the question concerns. I know it wasn't directed at the OP but it still gets a little old.

First off, CALL HS Precision and see what they recommend...

Secondly, make sure the paint you want to use is compatible with the URETHANE top coat and current black 'Spackle' paint on the stock now.

As for the debate on the HS stock it's self...
I don't care for them one bit!
Not really what I'd call a 'Quality' piece of work.
I was against using them for the Army M-24,
And I think the current 'Adjustable' version is for the birds!

Just remember, if you EVER decide to 'Update' your stock,
DO NOT DRILL/CUT INTO IT!
You will be DISAPPOINTED at what you find! And they are HARD to fix once you cut into them!

Just sell it to some 'Tacti-Cool' guy for way too much money, and start shelling out for a McMillan!

When I'm building for 'Tactical' support role,
I'll go McMillan every time!
MUCH better stock, and not that much more expensive...

H-S told me last year that the original paint is an excellent base to topcoat with just about any type of spraypaint. Just degrease it with something like mineral spirits and topcoat with your favorite spraybomb.

I chose to just send mine in and have them respray it. They will repaint any H-S stock for $80 and they look just like new.

I have to agree with benzy2 that the H-S speech gets a little old. I wonder why it won't go away like some of the other similar internet crusades. Zumbo, Cooper, Ruger, Smith & Wesson have all been in the hot seat and it kinda dwindled after a while but not this one. I personally have too many other things worthy of my time and attention to get too excited about it.

I'm not saying I want what they said and supported to pass away soon. I think they should stand by what they believe and face those consequences. I just don't see how bringing it up in a thread asking basically about what spray paint to use helps anyone at all, especially the OP who is just asking for some basic info on what to use. It seems like there is a time where stating the companies background is relevant and a time where it isn't and this seems like a time it isn't.
