How much ammo do you usually carry with your CCW?

Dont worry I have torpid's ok to start new thread with a poll same question. Torpid thanks for the good thread to begin with.

My option isn't up there. I'll repost my reply from the other thread, though.

Generally, no less than 26 rounds. If I'm cycling, only 5- 10, as I carry my .44 special then. If I'm headed somewhere like Eugene or Portland, I might carry an extra mag, or even a second gun with several reloads. At that point, I could have, oh, 80+ rounds on me(more for the ability to hand off a gun than anything else). I also have several hundred rounds boxed in my vehicle at any given time. It may sound paranoid, Hel, I KNOW it does, but I figure it's better to have than not have, and need it. I'd hate to get dead for lack of ammo, after surviving without CCW for years.....

So, we need an option for 3 extra mags....anybody carry 4 extra? Do I hear 4 extra..?:neener:

2 extras =1X15 rounder and 1X 10rounder

Total # of rounds=36;). I would probably carry more, but I don't have any more mags for my Glock 23:evil: :)

2 extra, 1X15, 1X17 and 10+1 in the Taurus PT99. I ought to get another 17 rounder to replace the 10, then I could carry all 50 out of the box!

i said one but that might deserve a little clarification.

13 in the gun, 20 round reload and i often have an extra gun on me and/or a rifle and five magazines in the truck.

No CCW yet. But depending on capacity I will likely carry one or two spare mags. If a revolver will go with a definite two speed loaders.

carry gun is a glock 26, with pierce +1 on the mags.

so 11+1 in the gun, plus another mag of 11 in my holster. 23 rounds should be enough for anything short of WW III.

Even though I carry a semi auto .45, its a compact, so the mags only hold 6 rounds. For that reason I carry two extras during the winter. Sometimes I only have one with me in the summer. Note...for all these years of carrying...this is 18 rounds more than I've ever needed....but I've never begrudged the weight. :D
Mark.

I only carry what's in the gun, although I keep a spare in the car. I'm ambivalent about the usefulness of a reload. A spare mag has provided peace of mind the times I've carried it, but I don't do so any longer. For all the self-defense situations I can think of where a spare magazine would come in handy, it would be needed only because of error on my part. I'm of the opinion that if I can't do it in seven service-caliber rounds, I shouldn't have pulled the gun.

Please note that these opinions are applied to me alone, and should not be taken as an indictment of your carry techniques or philosophy. You know your needs better than I; besides, it doesn't even have to be about needs. If it makes you comfortable to carry extra ammo, more power to you.

My main CCW ia a five-shot Taurus 450. Although I don't carry extra ammo, I often pack a .38 snubbie or an AMT 380 in addition to the 450.
Bottom line is, I don't carry extra ammo.

At least one.

You forgot the part about "is this ammo in a spare gun" ? :D

I practice reloads over my bed
This is to keep me from waking up dead

This is important, not always fun
I still train and learn to pull a second gun

Yeah I know it is corny, but I had to come up with something with new shooters for them to remember some things...

it depends

when i carry my kahr pm9 i carry one mag spare ( its carryed deep ) when i carry the sig 220 i carry two reloads ( when concealment isnt such an issue ie normal concealment ) i never carry without at least one reload no matter what i carry so i voted 1 LOL

One reload for whatever is carried at minimum- one spare magazine for semi, a speed strip for revolver. With a shotgun there is a sidesaddle on board the gun and a small canvas bag with sling to carry more (usually 20 rounds of 00 and 20 rounds of slugs). Shotgun is like a certain credit card- don't leave home without it.

If a handgun is to fight your way to the long gun you should have had, how much good does the handgun do if the long gun is 50 miles away?

I usually carry just the mag that's in the gun when I carry my .45. I figure for what I most likely will encounter, I'll have a bigger problem than any gun is going to solve if 8 rounds of 165-gr. Hydra-Shok won't solve it.

However, I am eventually going to invest in a 2nd mag for that gun. Financial difficulties at the present though have kept me from that $45 investment.

For the .38 snubbie, I usually carry a speedloader in the pants pocket, but that changes too depending on mode of dress (e.g. dress pants that don't accomodate the speedloader without creating a bulge).

I always hear about everyone carrying 1-2 spare mags, and at least 20 rounds of ammunition on them at all times. Am I the only one that thinks it might be a little bit "overkill". I like being prepared, but the "uber-tactical Mall Ninja"-ness of carrying all that extra stuff kinda makes me queasy. My gun, a cell phone, and a spring-assisted folder knife keeps my mind at ease to handle any situation that may arise. (Hopefully, those situations never will).

1911 in the summer under a Tshirt, which is 8+1, +8
BHP in the winter in an Alessi Bodyguard, which is 15+1, +15 +15.

Yeah Yeah, i know, i SHOULD be going heavy in the winter and light in the summer, but the BHP is thicker and I prefer as thin as possible in summer.

Depends.....

If I am carrying my Bersa 380, I carry an extra mag. Its little, so its easy to have 7 more rounds..thats 15 total.

If I am carrying my XD9, just the mag in the gun.

Like some others, after considering the most likely encounters, 15 or 16 rounds of ammo should be enuff for a SD situation for ME....Others may feel differently :p

for me at least

for me at least the reason for extra mags is malfunctions you know TRB drill , same goes with revolvers that are fed via speedloaders , if something goes bad easy fast fix is reload , not fumble arround diagnosing the issue tho i do agree to a degree with the above statement on " tactical mall ninja's " i think reload(s) are prudent because nothing with moving parts is perfect ( at least not in my experiance ) anyway i could be wrong ( the wife tells me i am a lot ) :neener:

Minimum is 5 in my S&W 340, with an extra 5 in a speedloader.

Usual is 10+1 in my G26, with an extra 17 in a G17 mag.

If I think I may need more than that, I'm going to be somewhere else instead.

My carry guns
S&W 9/642 5 rounds in moonclip in gun + extra 5 rounds in moonclip in pocket
S&W 13 3" 6 in gun + 2 HKS speedloaders in pocket
1911 franken 8+1 in gun, + 0, 1, 2 - 8 rounder mags depends on how I feel
