I went to a local pawn shop yesterday, looking for old military rifles. Nothing of interest, but an old cut down Mauser in the corner. Maybe worth a second look? Why not, I picked up this poor ole girl, whose barrel had lost 3", and stock bastardized in front of the rear band. Could it be worth the $70 price tag? What looked me in the eyes when I turned her around was a beautiful 1915 Danzig Gewehr 98 receiver, with matching bolt, trigger guard, floorplate, and sight! The huge downside is the cut down stock and barrel were also matching. So I pulled this nasty old beast to the counter and showed him the broken firing pin, the hacked stock, and the dark bore. "$40 out the door?" I asked, and was blown away when he said "Sure, let me have your drivers liscense and I'll get the paperwork". :)
Restoration here we come! I'll post pics up later, I'm on a barrel and stock hunt:neener:

You might have a real treasure. I had a Sporterized Kar 98 made from a 1939 Sauer, bore perfect, all matching, great markings, etc, that was also a fine shooter. Was dumb enough to sell it, thinking I could find another in the future.
Haven't seen one since.

I have found one source for barrels, GPC has some with minor pitting and a dark bore for $54.95. However, I have a Czech 98/22 with a beautiful bore I'm debating on pulling apart for the barrel. The stock markings are perfect, and as I stated the numbers match the receiver. I'm also thinking maybe I might try finding a similar colored walnut stock and splice a new front end on this stock. I wish to restore this as a Gewehr 98 like she should be:)
