Varmint Caliber = 243 winchester
Mid-Range Caliber = .308 winchester
Heavy Caliber = 300 win mag

The 338 win mag is also a good choice, but the recoil is vicious, not sure I could handle it.

You know one rifle could handle most of this stuff just need the correct barrles either tompson center or NEF Handi rifle.

.22LR for anything up to and including Coyotes.
.30-06 for everything up to Moose and Elk
.375 H&H for Brown bear and Buffalo (not that I'd ever need it.)

More observatons

1) the 223 is still the favorite in the 1st category

2) The 30-06 has more support than before some coming in the medium categiry. That kind of surprises me.

3) Man what a following the good old 45-70 has!:D

I think it is probably my top choice as well.

.22 LR target practice and plinking

.308 for all 3 catagories you can load it down with super hot lil 75 grn pills for everything from cotontails to your yotes , load 110 or 168 grn slugs for deer and other game in same weight class or load it up with 190s and drop black bear and Elk

this is assuming at least minimal hunting skill so ya aren't forced to depend on glass and 800 yard shots to drop an Elk as some hunters think its illegal to take deer/elk within anything closer that 500 yards........ I go for the 20-25 yards myself (been a bow hunter my whole life) and at 25 yards a .308 is more than enough for even the largest Elk or griz both of which I've taken with a bow already so figure anyone who can avoid getting drunk the night before the season opens and who isn't confined to a wheel chair or dragging around 300lbs of body fat should be able to do likewise, thats where the .22 comes into play..... spend alot of time stalking rabbits, with their hearing its great practice and once ya can stalk up on a Jack without him alerting..... elk become easy

We don't really need a "large" caliber on this continent, at least not in the CONUS. A .22LR has to be in every collection, no matter how limited or how broad. I would do nicely with

.22LR
.223
.308

with 7.62x54r a close second to .308.

But I do understand those who chose .45-70 for a large caliber.
