WOW !!! 16 of 57 posts mention the 45/70 - there's a surprise !!

And none mention the 30/06 ! Well, no surprise there at all

(I suggest that) you should go back and re-read the posts.

There are several that have the wonderful .30-'06 Springfield posted. It's just not written as you have it (30/06).

I posted .308 or .30-'06. (See first page of replies. Post #18.)

At the moment all 3 of my centerfire rifles are .223s so that will definitely be my first pick , so here goes:

1- .223 Rem
2 - .243 Win or 6mm Rem
3 - .308 Win or .30-06 Springfield

If you had to limit your rifles to 3 calibers, small, medium and, large, what 3 would you pick.

Easy1 the three calibers I'd choose would be .22, .30 and .45!

Those are calibers. From there I'd chose cartridges of those calibers. :p

Same as several other posters:

.22 LR - You gotta have a .22!

.30-06 - 110 grain to 250 grain bullets... can do most everything

.45-70 - For the really big stuff

If I had to limit myself to 3 rifles...

.22lr (for anything where .308 is absurd overkill)
.308
.50bmg (for anything where .308 is not nearly enough)

that about covers it.

.223 or the .204 Ruger. I own both, and feel good about being limited to either one.
.30-06 Because it's the .30-06, and nothing else needs to be said:neener:
.45-70 see my reasoning for the mid-bore:D

.223 Rem(can be bought anywhere, and is reasonably cheap compared to other choices)
260 Rem (so i can still shoot long range for fun)
45-70 (will do anything on this continent or africa, and the lever actions give you some quick follow ups for dangerous game)

just some numbers 22lr and 223 are close for small game.
a 223 will rip a rabbit in half(bullet selection is critical)

308 30-06 are hand in hand for medium game

45-70 is the single favorite by far for large game although the "odd" entries are more numorous

I am suprised by so many 223 entries for medium game seems light for deer to me.

5.45X39mm Now that is cheap and plentiful :)

my three are:

.22 LR
.308/.30-06
.45-70

As A side note I think 6.5x55SE is a wonderful cartridge and while fairly well known is still far to over looked in this country. Only Reason I listed .308 is because I own several rifles in this caliber.
