7.62X39 for EBR
30-06 for game
7mm Remington Magnum for that, reach out and touch some one

small: .22
Medium: .308
Large: .338 Lapua

Sorry, those are the 3 calibres I have, I left .223 out of there....

1. .22LR as the more you shoot the lill double duece, the better you will shoot everything else.

2. my second is the .223 it is a very solid, effective, and versitile round, wide availability of ammo, for a wide number of different applications.

3. would be the ole 30-06, it gets the nod for me because of its versatility, the wide spread availability of ammo, and the fact that there is still much more in-expensive (surplus) ammo out there than the .308. Not much difference in the ballistics of the two, or recoil for that matter, and while the short throw .308 is a little quicker to cycle it is certainly just a VERY little quicker. I also have seen the 06 put down enough big deer, and very big tough wild hogs that I believe it quite capable of handling anything that I personally want to shoot. Especially if you become truly proficient with your weapon.

I know little to nothing about the .45-70. This thread has me interested!

I don't know how one could go without a .22LR so I have to pick that first.
I own .223/5.56 rifles, but still think the .22LR is more versitile for me, besides I'm not willing to spend $.50 a round when I can get it done for $.05.
I guess I'm "cheap"?

I studied, and read, and scanned this and other sites to find the ONE centerfire round that could do "just about it all" for me. It boiled down to .308.

I'm not familiar with anything "larger" than that other than the .30-06..

sooo...

It could go like this:

.22LR
7.62/39 or .30-30
.308

or

.223
.308
.30-06

I'm over thinking this aren't I?
These "if you could only have" kind of threads always boggles my mind here.

Just Three

Well, there's really no accompanying scenario to impose limits, but I'm gonna assume there's a reason you're stuck with only three.

At the low end, I'm torn. The .22 LR is a nice general plinking and practice round, fine for pest control and stuff. Still, you might want a little more beef, so the .22 WMR is in the mix there. So, going with what rifles I actually have, I guess we'll take the .22 LR for now, .22 WMR perhaps when I become better acquainted with it.

In the middle, for deer and such, I'm gonna break the rules and take a .357 carbine. Fired from a rifle, the .357 has rifle-like capabilities out to 150 yards, including deer. This gives me a lower powered load (.38 sp) I can use for medium varmints and bigger "small" game.

If the referee threatens to throw me out of the game for that, then my fallback is the .30 carbine.

Now, for large, although I have a healthy respect for the .308 and .30-06, I have neither. Sticking with what's in the safe, I'd use the .30-30 for the big stuff. I will acknowledge that it's not the hitter that the bigger cartridges are but, over time, the .30-30 has taken several of just about everything. There is also the little matter of I have to shoot the thing. I can shoot a .30-30 and handle the recoil. Having never fired the harder hitters, I don't know where'd I'd stand on tolerance for that.

So, for now, until I have broader experience (and a bigger safe) . . .

Small: .22 LR
Medium: .357 carbine
Large: .30-30

And, for what it's worth, I have all of those in lever rifles.

My 3 caliber picks are as follows:

small: 22-250 Sauer 202 Outback scoped with a Zeiss Conquest 6.5-20x50mm

medium: 30-30 Marlin 336SS scoped with a Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40mm

large: 270 wcf Sauer 202 Outback scoped with a Swarovski 3-9x36mm

.223 Rem
.308 Win
.30-06 Springfield

All of these cartridges are easy to find and are available in a wide variety of calibers and in a wide variety of loads. I can run hot and heavy '06 to take out the big stuff. .308 packs enough power for big game yet is versatile and relatively easy to shoot, .223 is everywhere and chambered in modern military firearms (as is .308).

I did not know you could legally hunt with .50BMG in any part of America.

I was kidding... hence the ":D:D:D".

my realistic choices would be...

.223
7mm Rem Mag
.308

22LR, .223 is tempting cause it can always be loaded down.

If .308 is as large as we can choose then it's a .308 because of the versatility of 30 caliber components.

12 gauge shot and slugs cause I want a shotgun too.

.22lr
.243
30-06

The .243 could be traded for a 7mm-08 but I have the .243 so its in my list. The .22lr and the 30-06 could never be traded for anything,I will always have rifles in these 2 calibers!
