223
7mm Rem Mag
45/70

I wouldn't use a 22lr on a song-dog unless I was so hungry enough to eat it.

Perhaps a .357 could replace the .223 on my list, but I don't own the rifle to find out... yet.

22LR (dirt cheap, good for hunting small game)
308 (can pretty much take down any 4 legged animal on this continent, no problems with the 2 legged ones too)
50 BMG (well, you never know when a T-Rex will come into town)

I've got two lists, what I already use and what I'd get for the purposes of your list. They are...

What I own:

.243

30-06

.300 Wby

What I'd get:

.243

7mm-08

.340 Wby

22 hornet
30-06
45-70

Reloading, the hornet can do what the LR can do as well as longer shots at slightly larger game, much as other 22 centerfires, with disadvantage of limited range.

30-06 needs no comment. There are a lot of other great cartridges that fit this nich also, most with a few more limitations.

45-70 in either a modern Marlin or a Ruger #1, will handle anything you cross.

Small:
.243 Win. - Very accurate, good for all varmints large and small, easy and tollerant to reload, excellent bullet selection, easy to shoot well.

Medium:
6.5x55 Swede - light recoil, flat shooting, extremely accurate and deadly. Superb for deer and antelope. Very easy to shoot well.

Large:
.45-70 Gov'mt. It'll take down any North American game when properly loaded. The lead pills it spits are rather LARGE! Not so easy to shoot well, but a converted Siamese Mauser in a laminated stock makes an awsome repeater! :D

Just my two cents...

Poper

.223 Rem (good all around Varmint caliber)
.270 Win (Current elk and smaller rifle, wouldn't be afraid to use it on Moose)
.338-06 (For things that bite back and just to be different didn't see one metnioned in 7 pages and I own one)

Uber fun thread!!

Since the 30-06 can handle anything in the lower 48 I decided to drop the 45-70. I had to have a 22LR for all the little critters to fill the pot or just get rid of the annoyance. Had to have 223 for self defense and varmints.

So, for daily sustenance my choices are:

22LR for stews when I'm cooking just for me
223 to keep the uninvited, uninvited
30-06 to keep family and friends fed

hmmm... if I were hunting coyotes I don't think 22LR would be what I would want... but a varmint caliber is just overkill for squirrels and rabbits...

I'm going with:

1. 22LR
2. .30-06

I really don't know that I would need anything else... What my 3rd choice would be... a 'tweener or a big gun?

If I could have my .22 squirrel gun plus three centerfires... for hunting...

1. .22-250 for varmints
2. 7mm-08 for almost everything else
3. .45-70
