Picked up the new Rifle. Question. Of Course.

When they make a claim of 1moa its not with surplus ammo. You need to match your ammunition with your ambition. You decide 1moa at 3,4,500 yards... use Hornaday or black hills match ammunition. There are other good options those are just 2.

just me, but I'd go with whatever the manufactuer says and is stamped on it. can probably find some cheap ammo that goes bang in that category. I don't shoot long range, but - you can tweak and tune with ammo that shoots a 6" group, might be easier than ammo that shoots a 2" group, cause the deviation is easier to pick up on. just food for thought. then when you move to match ammo, you might already be 1/2 MOA or somethign really tight. you'd just have to sight adjust a bit, but OK.

I have to agree with others that while the cheap ammo will work just fine, you will be dissatisfied with the lack of accuracy.

When I built my 308 AR, I did use the Winchester white box 147Gr ammo to get the scope close and then finished up dialing the scope in with better ammo. Too bad the Norma Tac 150Gr didn't shoot worth a crud in the AR since I stocked up on it years ago. I'll keep it for the Savage 12FVL since it does shoot the Norma Tac very well.

I've shot plenty of NATO 7.62 in a .308 with no issues. I've always been told don't do the reverse: don't shoot .308 in a barrel stamped 7.62x51.
Opposite holds true for 5.56 and .223 which is why the .223 Wylde was invented.
I had 7.62x51 cases stick in the chamber of my Savage 99F lever gun. The extractor would pop right out of the grooveI had to tap them out with a cleaning rod. I fired two of those rounds out of a box of 15, took all the rest back and swapped for factory .308. I never had that issue with any of the sporting .308 rounds I fired before or after.

I guess the case walls may have not sprung back to the original size causing them to stick, maybe the case walls were too thick (?).

In the OP’s new bolt gun this should not be an issue unless the chamber is minimum sized.

Stay safe.

I talked to my buddy who is a Marine and he told me to just buy some of the 7.62X51mm until I get comfortable then use the good stuff. My concern is that it's not 308 "in name."

FYI. Savage Arms just opened up and I talked to them. They told me that their firearms are only tested in 308. If I shoot the 7.62X51mm it voids my warranty. Thanks for all the info guys.

I am going to go in thinking this is a new endeavor for you.

You friend is smart, if you are coming from hand gun and rimfire world this is a very different animal. As in a wolf and chihuahua are both species but are very different animals, some rules are the same but many rules are not.

Getting behind the rifle and putting holes on paper is really the best way for you to "get use to" your new toy. And what ammo you use for this phase is really not that big of a deal. Now the poster that said everything will be a bit "off" from when you go to your "good" ammo is very true, but you should hit paper.

To savage, yea they will say that, but I would not sweat it.

If you're sticking with factory ammo, this is about as low as I would go. Free shipping on a case of 10 boxes.

But I'd prefer this. A little less expensive than Federal's 168 grain at the moment.

You bought a nice rifle. Feed it well. And save your brass.
That privi was greater than 2 moa in my 700. The Norma white tail 150 from academy was 24 dollars and about 1 moa. The side benifit of the Norma is the left over cases, and the bullet is acceptable for hunting if that need or desire arrives. It was cheaper than winchester military ball at the same store.... I'd try at least a box in testing.
