What is the deal with a Plainfield M1 carbines? I mean are they any good, reliable,etc.. I know absolutely nothing about them. I have a guy at work who wants to sell one and told me he wants 400 bucks. Is this a deal or a no go (also comes with 3 15 GI issue mags). Help is greatly appreciated.

I would look into getting a M1 Carbine from the CMP. They do not cost much more than a Plainfield and it has a WW II history that the Plainfield doesn't.
:D

"...are they any good, reliable, etc..." Depends on when it was made. Plainfield Machine Co. made exact copies of the carbine from 1960 to 1977. They are the best of the commercially made carbines. Milsurp parts will fit. Iver Johnson bought out them in 1977. IJ continued to make them until 1993, but the quality suffered somewhat.
I've had my Plainfield(made by PMC) for 30 some years. In all that time, it has never given me any problems a bath didn't fix. Never changed a single part. $400 is a bit steep though.
