I source for my previous statement:

In 2004 and 2005, the United States bought 185,000 AK-47s from an Eastern European country -- after Iraqis rejected U.S.-made M-16 assault rifles -- as part of a $2.8 billion program to deliver military equipment to Iraq. But a recent Government Accountability Office report said that 110,000 of them were unaccounted for, with about 30 percent of all arms distributed to Iraqi forces by the United States since 2004 missing.

Darn, that's 125,000 ARs that won't be sold here in the US! And a few zillion more rounds of ammo "for the war effort".... I'm guessing we'll never be able to purchase 5.56 for a reasonable price ever again....

I thought FN made the M-16's used by US Forces these days? Colt Defense LLC?

Sorry, but I don't think the comment about our government selling us all those old Garands will float in an argument- seems like they are always SOLD OUT, which says to me that more people want one than there are available in quantities that our gov't allows...

That and the CMP is not exactly the general public, or even the general gun owning public. I am a member at two ranges and neither one is CMP affiliated or holds matches.

My point was that someone suggested there was a conspiracy to keep us from getting ammo.

My point was that our government is too stupid to get that done :)

Once again foreigners are trusted with weapons the US government makes too expensive for me to buy. I don't feel so free anymore :(

They didn't have guns, needed two people, and possibly shot down more migs than any other plane in history.

Thread rift galore here but the early Phantoms did carry pods with a 20mm Vulcan cannon.

The Marines used Phantoms with a pod under each wing for ground support.

There wasn't a gunsight in the cockpit though so they were useless in a dogfight :)

Beginning with the E model Phantom an internal cannon was added.

Did not know that I learned something today. Maybe this will turn into something like the f-14 deal. Iraq ends up with a bunch of m16s with no parts to keep them firing.

Last week the Iraqi Government announced they were buying $100 million of arms from China. This doesn't make sense if the Iraqis want to switch to M16 rifles. Is this China deal being used to prod the U.S. to speed up delivery of weapons?

The Iraqi's and the Afgans were offered M16's a while back. They flat refused them. They were more comfortable with the AK's. They require less maintance that the M16's so it is better suited to the dusty terrain.

Hmm.

"Lets arm this new army of democracy with a new weapon in a caliber that is not interchangeable with any of the other armed forces caches they might overrun."

Government is teh smarts.

Oh ouch, thats a way to leave a bitter tatste in the mouth. I'm sure he's aware of the AK's capabilities and handicaps in the desert more than I do, but I'm also sure he's not extremely knowledgeable of just how bada$$ the AR platform can be when used properly and efficiently.
