A guy I know who owns a gun store has about 200 or so police trade-in's that he'd like to sell quickly. He asked me if I would be willing to help in some way.

He'll ship to any FFL using UPS overnight service. He charges a flat $35 for shipping.

The pistols he has are S&W 4006's, 5906's, 6906's and Beretta 96's and 96D's. I don't know yet how much he wants for each of the models.

What would you consider to be a really good price for any of these, including the shipping costs? I don't mean a "boy, did I steal that gun" price, but a price that you'd be pleased with?

I don't want to jump through a lot of hoops if his prices are going to be too high.

Any replies are much appreciated.

Speaking from experience, most service pistols have the heck beat out of them and are rarely cleaned.

I was an instructor and armorer for 20 years...you couldn't give me a retired service weapon. As a rule, cops are the worst gun owners you can imagine!

I feel police officers treat their pistols very well (at least the ones that I personally know do).

Basically 1/2 the original sticker price is about right for a retired firearm. Just because they have had alot of rounds run through them and holstered/carried their entire life.

Most agencies offer them for purchase to the LEO first and then public sale second. Not sure how much the LEO is charged if he decides to buy it. Maybe an LEO/former LEO can chime in? Good luck!

:)

I bought a 5906 from Summit for $300 plus shipping plus $25 for the transfer at my ffl. I like the pistol and it is in very good condition but I wouldn't pay any more than that.

We are not allowed to buy our retired service weapons direct from the department. However, the company that buys them from the department, allows us to "tag" our personal weapon, and then they will sell it back to us, usually at the same price they paid the department.

It is normally slightly less than what you would expect to pay at a retail store for the same weapon, the primary advantage being the LEO knows how he/she treated the weapon.

I talked to the owner of the shop again today. He has several models of Smiths, Beretta's and Glocks.

The ballpark price is now $320 including overnight shipping. The Smiths could be less, the Beretta's more (they're in excellent condition). I need to take a look at all of the guns.

Any further comments much appreciated.

I'm not very experienced with used guns, but I bought a used SIG 225 for $350 while I was on leave and I've been very happy with it. In good shape, extremely accurate, and a good shooter. I had one or two misfires, but I'm not sure if that was me or the gun.

I'm very interested in the Berettas, so when you know how much they are be sure to tell us! For a used 96, I'd jump through a flaming hoop at $200-250 shipped, but depending on what my FFL is charging for the transfer I'd go higher.

And let us know if any 92s get thrown into the mix!

I've bought two police trade-ins from CDNN. Both were like new and very clean. One was a 4006 and the other was a 4013. Both had night sights. That's something that you didn't mention is what type of sights do they have?
The only blemishes on them were a few scratches on the grips. I bought factory and put on the 4006. I put a set of Hogue grips on the 4013.

I've worked with officers at both extremes. One of my former instructors at the academy just made USPA grandmaster. Another guy I went to the academy with was PROUD of the fact that due to the .40 ammo shortage at the range not requiring him to have to qualify this quarter (we do it the quarter you b-day falls in annually), he has not shot since he got out of the academy (so almost 19 months now).

I'd put the Smiths in the $ 250 range. The Berettas around the same or slightly higher.

I bought a 5906 Atlanta PD trade in gun a couple of years ago for $ 225. Pretty well beat up from seat belt and holster wear, but shoots like a charm.

I've found that most LE trade in guns are dirty and cosemetically challenged, but shoot like new - 'cuz most cops only shoot when they have to qualify.

A family member of mine was able to purchase their glock 22 that had been carried for 5 years for $265 with box and 4 mags and new night sites that had just been put on about a month earlier before the department replaced all duty weapons.

I'm fairly interested in a 92 or 96 and would greatly appreciate if you'd pass along some contact info if you don't mind - you can PM or email me([email protected], and I will respect privacy and all that.

Also, what sort of finish are we talking(I'd always prefer regular blue), and can you tell us whether they're DA/SA or DAO(yuk)?

Thanks!
- Ben

The manager of the store has to put together a list of all of the guns, along with prices on each.

From the replies above, I'm guessing that the prices will be too high for most of the folks here.

One of my favorite sites but for now he's out of 5906s and 4006s and doesn't know when he'll get more in .*SIGHS* I gues I'll subscribe to this thread for now to keep track .
