I'm thinking about my next gun, and I'm thinking either a Garand from the CMP or a Ruger 1911. I thought it would be cool to buy a 1911 in the year 2011. I also want a Garand in the same price range. I don't own either of these types of guns yet.

I would get a Colt with the 100th Anniversary rollmark in 2011.

However, the other posters are correct in that they aren't making any more Garands, and so the CMP supply is bound to dry up eventually.

Buy the Garand. It is a piece of history and not riding on history like the Ruger. There are only so many Garands available now and Ruger will be making 1911's until the fad wears out.

If you really want a 100th anniversary 1911 do the right thing and get a Colt. If it ain't a Colt it's an imitation.

CMP has indicated that the Garand supply will, at present demand, run out in the next 2-4 years. 1911s are still being made and show no signs of disappearing in the foreseeable future. Get the Garand now, before the prices jump several hundred dollars, and get the 1911 in the future when you next want a good pistol.

What he said...

I am much more a rifle than a handgun person. But I would go for the 1911. In long guns I have not been into the semi-autos that much.

Thanks for the advice guys. I think I will go with the Garand. I'm sure that the 1911 will always be available in the future.

Like others have said get the M1 now. In 50 years you can still buy new 1911's but Garands will be long gone.

Buy the Garand

Only a little over 6 million M1 Rifles were made between 1936 and 1957. Any idea how many are rusting away in the ocean? Any idea how many are damaged beyond repair? How many will never come back from the Lend/Lease program? Or how many got sent thru the shredder by order of the anti-gunners?
No more military surplus Garands are being made.
That's why I suggest you buy one now. 1911s are coming from many makers in many configurations and will be for years.
JMHO

They quit making Garands for a reason. It does not have a detatchable magazine. If I were in the market for a full powered battle rifle I would buy an M-1A (M-14) or a large frame AR and a bunch of magazines. The Garand is not bad, neither are Zippo lighters, 8MM movie cameras and manual type writers, there are just better modern versions.

As for the 1911, no one has really come up with a better design yet.

The quantities of Garands isn't going up. There is some great about holding a Garand. The Ruger will be available for the foreseeable future. The other positive of waiting on the Ruger is that your are likely to pay less if you can hold off for six months or so.

You should get what you really what most.

what do you want?

A collectable? get the Garand.

or a gun you're going to shoot the snot out of? then get a modern manufactured 1911
Not all Garands are necessarily just collectibles. I shoot mine regularly.

I vote to get the Garand. If you can, make a trip out to the CMP and pick out one yourself.

I said Garand, but be sure to also get the ".30 M2 Ball" 30.06 Springfield ammo. The Garand {without installing an Adjustable Gas System (link to Brownells)} can only shoot the M2 ammo. Non-Garand ammo could damage the op-rod.

The CMP has Greek M2 ball ammo for $96.00 for 192 rounds already on the en-bloc clips ($0.50 a round), This is the cheapest ammo for the Garand you can find it anywhere (minus rolling your own).

My $495 'Field Grade' has been a very good shooter. Don't think you have to spend $800 on a Garand. I even like the beat up stock, gives it character.

I bought a garand and shot it for the first time last week. Gotta say, it may have been one of the funnest guns i have ever shot. Makes me wanna sell my AR or my M14... And reloading 30.06 is cheap and easy. Cant beat it one bit.

Which one means more to you?
Which one would you get more use out of? Range time; Indoor vs. Outdoor
Just something to think about since you are looking at two completely different firearms.
