Every so often I happen across some odd (for lack of a better term!) S&W revolver variant I'd never imaged existed, like a model 242 or 396. It's always fun to learn about these quirky models that are really cool but never seemed to gain wide appeal.

What kinds of oddball S&W offerings do you guys have? Care to post a pic and explain a bit about why it's unique?

..I always thought these unfluted cylinder's were a littll odd.

I have always liked the unfluted style.

I have an old 32-20 S&W. It's a pain to find 32 WCF here. When I can find it - expensive!

"Experts" on another forum wouldn't or couldn't comment on this model, which, by the way, is not found in any Smith & Wesson catalog, print or online, but after some extensive research, and finally talking with someone at S&W who had a clue, I was able to get the straight and skinny on how this particular model came to be, and why it was not a catalog item; do you know what and why of this "oddball" model?

686-3 8-3/8" with integral factory dovetails...Came complete with Millet rings (not the ones in the pic)...

It is my understanding that between models 629, 586, and 686, there were 4,810 made from 1988 to '89...

Here’s my unfluted 686SSR.

The original cylinder got past S&W’s QC with 7 flutes and 6 chambers, making it very dangerous.
I sorta raised hell about it and they installed the unfluted cylinder to make me happy.

The Model 27-2 in the bottom of this pic actually has a Model 27 frame mated with a 6" Model 28 Highway Patrolman barrel. The bluing on the barrel is better than most other Highway Patrolman's I've seen, but the matte non-checkered rib is a dead giveaway. On that subject, the fine checkering all over the backstrap and rear sight of the 27 frame is wonderful. The craftsmanship is really something.

I'll try to post a better pic.

When I was a kid, dad bought it as a from the sporting goods store where he was working. The story goes that two of them came from S&W and he had the chance to purchase one of them. I think the price was less than $300.

I'm no expert but I do recall commenting on your 360J as well as giving you some background on that particular model. It's a great little gun and one of the better buys to come out of the S&W factory in recent years.

A 360J, but you did not post your question in the form of a POLL. Alex T would be disappointed.:D

Howdy

OK, I'll play.

Here is my .22/32 Heavy Frame Target Model.

What's so oddball about that you say? Well, when you compare its size to a K22, it becomes obvious.

Why was it called the 'Heavy Frame'? Because prior to this model, the only 22 Hand Ejectors that S&W was making were the tiny little Ladysmiths. Compared to them, these really were 'Heavy Frames'.

This one shipped in December of 1923.

I thought folks were supposed to guess or reply on the model?

Anyway my post #10 is a 686

Only 2,700 where made with this finish, Which is what????;)

LC '92:
4 inch barrel with ramped front sight. Should be a 15-3 AFAIK.

Rule3:
You gave it away. Midnight black stainless. I think this was S&Ws attempt at producing a blued gun for the police and security market, while dropping carbon steel. For whatever reason they continued with the blued carbon steel guns for another decade or more.

.
Since this thread is a hotbed of S&W knowledge, does anyone know about the Smith&Wesson Model 3000 12 ga pump shotgun?

Apologize for the detour!

:p

200Apples:
The S&W 3000 was manufactured in Japan by Howa who currently manufacture the Howa Lightning and the Weatherby Vanguard series of rifles.

Per the Standard Catalog of S&W they were introduced in 1983, have dual action bars, machined steel receiver, cross bolt safety swappable for left or right hand use and an interchangable barrel feature.
Model 3000 had a 28 inch barrel and interchangeable chokes.
Model 3000 Waterfowler was 30 inches and full choke, parkerized.
Model 3000 Police was 18 or 20 inch barrel, blue or parkerized, fixed or folding stock to order, cylinder choke.

Model 360 in 38sp. These have been for sale at Buds Gun Shop a lot recently for under $500. I have been tempted to get them. When I first saw them for sale I did a quick google search of the model number 160360 and found plenty of info. It is the 38sp only model of the 360m&p (which is a 357). There have been a few threads about it on the S&W forum (and other message boards).

No on the King front sight.

Its a 4" factory model 14-3. One of 50 special ordered in 1971. 14's have either a 6" or 8-3/8" barrel.
