Powder Inventory

When I first bought my M1a, I made an online order for some IMR4895... 2x 8# jugs. I used it for the M1 Garand, already, and it seemed most of the M1a guys recommended it as a good place to start in the M1a. I must have double-tapped the 'Buy Now' button because one box showed up one day, and another box the next! ...so now I had 32# of IMR4895! I thought... sheesh! I'll never use all this! Wrong. Here I am, 15 years later, and I barely have 4# left. 600 M1 or M1a cartridges... and I'll be shopping, again.

I did the same thing when ordering some corncob media. A 40# bag showed up on the front porch one day. Another 40# bag showed up the next day. I figure I fumble fingered the order now button! Anyway, I good on corncob media for a good while!

I figure I fumble fingered the order now button!

The good news is... powder wasn't the only thing in that order, each order included a case of .380 FMJ factory ammos, 6 CMC 1911 magazines, and some other stuffs. This was just before the Obama Shortage... so when .380 was Unobtanium, I was setting fat on 2 cases of it! ...and you can never have enough 1911 magazines.

Just smelled some cannisters of powder in light of Walkalong's situation.
All good.
They all do have their own distinct smell though very different from one another.
W-231 and Longshot both are a flattened type ball powder, and have a similar smell.
They smell like old library books, with a hint of Scotch Whiskey. Very peatey. Longshot has larger flakes, though. Not very pungent.

Power Pistol, BE-86, Blue Dot, and 2400 all have a similar smell, pleasant and sweet. These have the best smell.

W-296, AA#9, and 300MP all have a very solvent-like smell. Hints of Spray paint, or mosquito repellent. Very pungent.

I have some older stuff and like Walk along I check it from time to time ...even load a few loads just to see... so far all these are ok..

I have had one full pound of IMR 4227 go bad ... the second pound of the same lot is fine ... this was in the flat metal can ... the metal started just like the lid of Walk along powder ... I burned that powder pouring it on a cement block lighting it with a long torch ... it was full of red dust mixed ...

Still good, I bought 4/5 pounds of the SR-4759 at a gun show going on 40 years ago, this is the last of it. The other two are close to that age, but newer overall.

I have a box of 10 1-pound cans of H322. They were old when I brought them from a closing LGS. About a year ago I found one can had corroded the way shown in the initial picture. I discarded that. Since then I loaded some rounds with powder from another H322 can and the powder looked fine.
I got a partial 8 pounder of H-322 a bit sooner than I got that N-133, and it's still good. I'm shooting it in .458 Win Mag and some .223.

Every 8lb jub I've purchased in the last 15 years, I'm expecting to have for the rest of my life. The only one I can see getting gone through would be the W-231.....and then the plan is to just run reduced charges of power Pistol til the bitter end....

I purchased two of the square cans of Hercules 2400 several years ago. One of the cans was open and I loaded some .357 mag rounds from the open can and ran them over my chronogragh. Same velocity as the new Alliant 2400. The other can is still sealed.

I'm learning from this thread, that some of you need to shoot more! Befriend some rednecks who have access to a gravel pit or dump. Really works well to expend those odds and ends, or as I refer to it "the random stuff, accuracy optional' pile. I started reloading centerfire around 93, and I'm pretty sure my oldest primer and/or powder including loaded ammo is somewhere around 2012.

That’s not where they are stored.
That would be weird.
I was just checking inventory.
That tiny 36” high door you see on the right leads to a room with 8” thick concrete walls and is 5’ under ground. It keeps a year round temperature between 50F-55F.
What here in Okieland is termed a 'fraidy-hole'. Where one ducks when the tornado just hit the house 200 yards away.

Or, where one sleeps on a hit summer night.

Love seeing those vintage cans!

I keep my powder in a cool dry place but I won’t open unopened containers just to look inside.

Thats a nice stock of powder! I'm glad you explained the water heater, I was going to ask about it! :)
