Seasons Greetings,

I have a pre 64 featherweight model 70 in 30-06 that has been in my safe for several years. I now want to give it a little attention and field the thing. I am not a big scope guy and want to utilize the iron sights. However, this particular rifle came from the factory with a not so user friendly flip down rear sight with pretty crude adjustment capabilities. I want to replace it and keep the original front sight. Anyone have a good suggestion on what I should replace it with? I'm not completely opposed to a receiver sight but would prefer to use the lot for the original sight and not crazy about the idea of drilling holes.

I'd be amazed if your receiver isn't already D&T'd for a receiver sight. Look for 2 plug screws on the left-rear side of the receiver. Check Brownells or Midway for Model 70 receiver sights and you'll be good to go.

A receiver sight is the very best option sans an optic.

Hemingway ordered a Springfield action rifle from Griffin & Howe in 30-06. It came with the iconic G&H scope mount with a scope as well as a receiver sight. Apparently Hemingway ditched the scope and mount somewhere early on and never put it back on.

I have a Winchester Model 70 made in 1939. Although it currently wears a fixed power scope, I also have receiver sight -- these rifles were made so the rear scope mount goes in front of the receiver sight (for low rings, you have to take the disk off the sight) and have both mounted at the same time -- a great backup capability.

Pre war mod 70

Over the years there isn't much that has gotten away from this one........
