This is the question that I am now facing. Pawn shop has a pre warning 10-22 for $225, Wal-mart has a new 597 for $167.00.

I am probably gonna get one or the other.

What do you all think?

What is the big deal about the pre warning? Are they really that much better?

Wal-Mart here has a Model 60 in stainless.

That's what I'd get.

I currently own 10 .22s -- but I no longer own a 10/22.:D

i love my new 597 and it loves cheap rem THUNDER BOLT ammo. i have both the 10/22 is about a year old now and the 597 was bought on BLACK FRI. in Nov. iv added nothing to either. the 597 is a way better shooter out of the box. WAY BETTER!! + iv seen a lot of guys that have painted the stock in cam mo on the 597 and they look awesome with the 30rd mag in them. once again WAY WAY better gun. IMO

the last time i went to check my traps i took my ruger and used it as a club. JAM OMATIC PIECE OF ****

LOL

I've heard really good things about the 597, now that they fixed the initial magazine problem that gave the gun a bad rap at first.

That's why I don't own a 10/22 any more.

I got to the point where it was either pour money into it, or don't bother shooting it.

There are much better ways to use a few hundred bucks plus the price of a 10/22.

This would be one of them:

i agree armedBear. i just traded some train stuff for a new in the box Henry youth lever action. it puts the 10/22 to shame also. and their about the same $

have I been missing something?

what is "pre warning" in a 10/22?

It's a way to identify older model 10/22's. Up until the late 1970's Ruger never stamped a warning on their barrels. So if it's a "pre-warning" 10/22 that just means the gun is probably 30+ years old.

My 10/22 will go through bricks of ammo without any jams with good magazines.. but only after I bought a $11.50 Volquartsen replacement extractor! Absolutely a must have. I love the gun now that it is reliable.

thats a funny little gun you got their ARBOR i love the the heavy rock solid firing stone

Given the steady rise in the 10/22's price, I cannot understand why Ruger doesn't improve this part.

I own a rem 597 .22lr and have to say I'm very pleased with it. It is accurate and rarely jams. Jams are practically non-existent with quality ammo and cheap federal still feeds very well. When you strip down the rifle for the first time it is advised that you only finger tighten the guide rod screws. Apparently overtightening can lead to cycling problems, potentially bowing the rods. My 597 is mounted with a leapers 3-9x50 and is otherwise totally untouched.

You can get a group like that with a 10/22, too -- if you replace the barrel and the stock...:D

wow

I am shocked by the direction of this thread. A relative has the 10/22 and a friend has the 597. I would buy the 10/22 even if it cost double! The 597 is a jam-o-matic while the 10/22 has been super reliable - even with poor maintenance.

Both of these guns that I have had experience with are a decade or two old, so maybe that explains the difference in quality? Has the 597 gotten better while the 10/22 has slipped?

I shoot both and they are excellent guns but for how many rds I put through both I would say that they are both well worth the money. I do admit I love the feel of the 597 it's just comes to my shoulder like a dream.

I have a 1968 manufacture 10/22 that literally has had nothing done to it other than a swab or brush sent down the bore about once a year. Still on the factory mag as well.

Only malfunctions I've ever had with it could be linked to specific ammunition.

If you can find a nice example of an old 10/22 I'd jump all over it. The new ones I've handle just aren't up to par of the old guns, especially for what they want for them.

Even though the only thing i can specifically say I cannot stand about the new ones is the plastic charging handle. Beyond that it's just a general feel of it not being "right".

As for the 597, a friend of mine had one that was more accurate than my 10/22, but was very particular about magazines. I don't know how many he went through to get 3 or 4 that would function 100%.
