I have been seeing notifications, and signs in some aisles at local stores, that coming May, ammo and firearms prices will be climbing 15-25%. I've heard everything from component cost going up, to taxes going up. If I remember right, guns and ammo are protected from excessive increases, because it puts guns out of the reach of common man. I can't remember the ruling or case, just remember reading somethin about it a year or so ago.

BCD - just look at the prices of food and fuel and what they have done over the last couple of years. ALL commodity prices have risen, including the copper used to make brass, the chemicals to make powder, and the fuel to move all of them.

I went to Sportsman's Warehouse yesterday, man I about fainted when I saw the price of .38/.357 mag ammo! $42.00 for 50 357 mag cartridges? My gawd, I can remember when a box of 38's was $10.00, and it hasn't been that long since I bought some. Course, SW isn't the cheapest either, I did buy a couple boxes of .38's for $12.00 a box, I wasn't going to drive around to compare prices, thank God I reload!

what i was remembering

that i was remembering is number 6 on this page

I do know the raw materials prices have gone up, what I didn't know was that it hadn't already been adjusted for, since it seems like costs have not dropped much at all since the great ammo recession post election.

In other news, I just did some kwik math today and it looks like the thirteen guns and all of their associated accessories that I've paid just a hair over $3,300.00 for since last March are worth close to $4,900.00 on the open market right now.

I'm feeling pretty good about that tonite.......:D

Any person or store telling you that "xyz will go up in price at a certain time" doesn't know what they're talking about. Market factors make prices go up, and any market factor that was known ahead of time would already have driven the price up.

It's kinda like taking lottery numbers from a "psychic". If they truly knew the winning numbers why would they tell YOU?

What they're actually trying to do is drive their own sales higher. If they can convince the public that they need to buy ammo NOW, then they sell more and make more money. Don't fall for it.

Last winter/spring, a number of distributors told people and some advertised the same thing, that it would happen in April or May.

By late last summer, increases were much smaller than what people had been told.

They want to generate the same anxiety that worked quite well on the naive masses after the '08 election.
What the public then failed to understand (explained to me by astute friends) was that the new White House so-called "leadership" needed most of their fresh "political capital" for the new health care bill etc.

And that is exactly what happened, as the scalpers who propagate such panic often made a killing-until the panic gave way to "level heads".

i think a lot of people think that if obama gets in again(which i hope he doesnt), he is going to jack up the prices on guns and ammo because he has nothing to lose. good luck trying to find guns at good prices if he get in.

p.s. mods if this is low road you can delete this post.

Some places will have their prices go up. Other places will have their prices stay the same. Be wise with your shopping and reward those who keep their prices the same. If you buy your ammo at your LGS or big shop like Gander you are throwing your money away. They may have more selection but with some hunting you can find what you want online.

Walmart may go up a little because it's Walmart afterall. Folks will reload more, buy less factory ammo and over time the market will correct itself. I take a lot of stashed ammo off people at 50% of new prices and it shoots just as well. I got a 1000 rounds of Eagle 9mm for $100 cash so I won't need any 9mm anytime soon.

Reload your .357 and .44 magnum. Get ready to reload your 9mm and .45 ACP. Stay away from the big stores, you'll just end up paying for their CEOs to have million dollar yachts.

hmm

Well, it was a CDNN advertisement in the current SGN that got me looking. At the local BPS there are signs up saying that reloading components may become scarce soon. So I am just not sure whats going on really. At the moment, I guess I continue to buy as normal.

Prices of raw materials are up all over, especially copper and steel. Gas is still up, so shipping costs are up. This will lead to increases for the customer. Demand is also up for high-quality steel components - we're being quoted 12-18 month wait times for certain barrels and actions for precision rifles.

That said, the "May price increase" alert was for last May, not next May, and the it was put out by ATK to the distributors and dealers.

Did it say exactly which May (2012, 2013, 2014 - etc) these things were going to increase?

we are entering a hyper-inflation scenario where bread will be $10 a loaf, if you guys think prices have gone crazy in the past 6 months better hang on to your diapers.

buy it cheap and stack it deep never meant more than it does in these times. i have 4000 rounds of 9mm that was snagged for under $7.50 a box shipped en route.

if you guys want to see your dollars earning power sustain this inflation transfer it into silver and gold, they will keep pace and outpace inflation.

And the laws of econ 101 over rule. Costs go up, prices go up. Many companies may only take increases once per year; if they do, it is typically late winter/early spring. With the POSSIBLE onset of ObamaCare, my wife's insurance has raised her monthly contributions 30% in two years - and it isn't even in effect yet - I imagine some of the gun companies are feeling similar cost increases

Everything is going to keep going up, except your paycheck of course.

It doesn't take an economist to figure out that if the government continues to keep printing more money to throw at failed projects, the value of your dollar will continue to fall, so ammo and everything else will take more dollars to buy.

You think that's bad, if you are a taxpayer, you owe $133,225.

This is not necessarily true. I run a business and if I say that next May, our prices will rise by 25%, you can be sure that they will, because I'll keep my word and raise them. I decide if prices go up, not market factors. Steel prices have been increasing our costs for years now, but we've decided to keep prices at 2008 levels, despite market factors. If I put a sign up that says prices will increase by 15% next summer, my customers should take advantage of our products before then.

I was in the local big box store (you can guess which one) the other day and noticed the prices on Federal ammo seems to have dropped-I'm pretty sure the 9mm had. From memory, it went from $9.97, $10.97, $11.50 (or $11.97, can't remember for sure), but it's now back down to $10.97.

Can't tell 'bout the other ammo prices as I usually go with Federal, and buy most of my practice ammo there.

Every time I shop for groceries, I swing by the ammo case to check inventory, which has been steadily increasing for quite some time. I figured prices may be coming back down due to inventory?

There were letters that went out to dealers regarding price increases starting in August. But it was an expected increase as mentioned by everyone above.

Heck, I come from teh wargamming hobby. Quarterly price gouges from companies like Games Workshop have prepped me for price increases here. ;)

My suggestion is if you buy loaded ammunition, you should employ "dollar cost averaging" and continue to buy as you are able to purchase the ammo. At the time of purchase, seek the best price you can based on your circumstances and buy.

Prices go up all the time. I see nothing particularly motivational that there might be a price increase in 6-months for guns or ammuntion.

Also consider, based on your personal shooting habits, is it worth tying up potentially thousands of dollars in ammuntion for the sake of saving 15%? I personally don't think so unless you have a reason to stock up on ammunition. Many do have a reason, and that should be enough justification.

I'm noticing that ammo prices are DROPPING. Dicks is now selling 9mm Remington for $9.99. It hasn't been that low in about 4 years.

Quarterly price gouges

Are they holding as gun to your head demanding you buy their product? Not hardly, so PLEASE stop with the GOUGING BS - YOU pay your money voluntarily - that is NOT gouging; try going outside now and again instead of gaming - you might appreciate the fresh air
