For me, the primary purpose is recreation. For me, guns are just flat out fun.
I very much enjoy target shooting/plinking with my guns, hitting a watermelon with my SKS is fun. On the other hand, my guns are also there for personal protection, the chances I'll ever have to use one of my guns in self defense is remote, but they are there to serve that purpose. I can take comfort in the fact that I control my own destiny, I do not have to rely on anyone else or any govt institution for my own protection, guns are a symbol of independence and self reliance. Guns also mean exercising a cherished American right. That's pretty much what guns mean to me.
