Short-term SHTF

I voted for short-term disruptions in society. Here's my story:

I always thought of myself as a good conservative. You know, vote Republican, save for my own retirement, pay for my own health insurance, all the things a good conservative is supposed to do - don't depend on the government. But for some reason my family's security seemed to be the exclusive domain of the government. I never put much thought into it, it's just the way I was raised (in Passaic County, New Jersey, outside of NYC).

Then hurricane Katrina happened and, like many Americans, I witnessed a breakdown in social order. As I watched the images on TV, I realized that I was totally unprepared if I ever found myself in a situation like that. So this year, at age 45, I went out and bought my first gun. I joined a gun club and took lessons. I earned my CCW here in Colorado. I'm even stocking up ammo! (Though most of you put me to shame).

Yes, I enjoy going to the range and I hope to enter some shooting competitions, but for me it's about protecting my family against difficult situations that might arise in the future.

It's a mix. I got "back" into firearms a couple of years ago because I really enjoy the challenge of shooting well and friendly competition. However after two major abdominal surgeries I simply cannot delude myself any longer that I could go toe-to-toe with anyone who doesn't have a 6" surgery scar in their belly. Since that sort of personal defense is right out the window it was only prudent to find another.

I purchased mine at first for collecting, and now for Self-Defense. No, I don't carry any of the C&R handguns, although that is an option. I use modern guns for Self-Defense.

I wonder what this poll woud look like with a representatve sample of gun owners in the US. My guess is that hunters tend to be under-represented on THR (especially on this forum). It seems as though I knows loads of hunters who would never dream of carrying. What do you think?

The Primary reason I own guns is because I like 'em. I put recreation because I enjoy target and clay shooting, but self defense is a close second - however if self defense was my only reason I wouldn't need but one or two, and yet I find myself lusting after many

Hunting is what got me into guns. I have more guns dedicated to hunting than any other. I wish we could select multiple choices.

I would say Hunting and Recreation are the reasons I own so many. Self defense is a great importance, but it is not the reason I own many guns.

I have an AR-15 and a 1911 for Defense. Everything else is for fun and hunting.

Hunting is where it started for me. Most of my guns are for hunting, and recreation. i do have few pistols for HD and ccw.

Protection of self and home primarily, though I must admit to getting a warm and fuzzy feeling when I think of all those people who are so alarmed by the simple fact that I can have one. I really need to begin accumulating more of the items they find so objectionable.

1. Because in CA, it's a political statement
2. To protect me & mine

I was being threatened by a crazy person..............I asked the sheriffs department for help. Sheriff said he could not defend me.....only enforce laws after they were broken. I then took it upon myself to defend myself. Started with a cheap SKS and the rest is history. Take my weapons if you dare !!!
