I use CCI primers and have discovered that the small pistol primers are a bit too hard for reliable ignition in my .38, .357 reloads. Im looking for recomendations for softer primers. BTW the light strikes are due to trigger jobs on 2 of my revolvers the primers light fine in other stock revolvers.

Clifford,

Are you shooting a S&W K,L frame?
If you are try tighten the strain screw for the main spring tension, it may be backed off too far and causing light primer strikes.

Seems to me if you have to hunt down one brand of primers because nothing else will work.

It's the guns that are too soft, not primers that are too hard!

If reliable ignition is that close to the edge, you will not be getting consistent ignition with any brand primer. That impacts several things, including consistent velocity and accuracy.

Federal primers

I use the same to get my CZ down to a respectably light triggerpull using a 13 or 14 lb hammerspring instead of 20 lbs. 100% reliable with Federal. Several/ hundred won't fire with others..

The CZ team uses the Federal for the same reasons as above. Federal is cited as using an older formula that is easier to ignite

Right along with Federal primers as easy to ignite, we've found that MagTech are also easy. If you can't find the Federal's, then try for the MagTech's.

Is someone did unscrew the strain screw, it needs to be screwed in all the way, as they will unscrew by themselves if not tight.

Hope this helps.

Fred

Yep i know i could replace the leaf spring or adjust the tension but i really like the trigger pull the way it is. Im more than willing to change primers to get reliable ignition, if i still have issues after changing primers i will adjust mainspring tension. Now all i have to do is find someone with federal primers in stock!

A lot of folks, especially the customized, competition revolvers, use pretty much exclusively Federal, as they tend to play well with those. I have found that CCI are some of the hardest. I normally use Winchester, but I am not in the customized, competition revolver crowd, either.

My .02...

ReloaderFred: Thanks for the Mag-Tec tip. The @3!% Federals are scarce!

ReloaderFred: If my 20001st Mag-Tec fails, I'll probably be okay with that.

1SOW,

You're welcome. I've only used the MagTech small and large pistol primers, but haven't had a bad one in over 20,000 of them. I know that's a relatively small sample, but my experience with them has been good.

I agree with rcmodel. It's the gun that needs adjusting here and not the primers unless this is just a range toy and you're willing to live with reliability issues. A proper action job should touch off any primer available.

Do tighten the strain screw down all the way as ReloaderFred suggests. If the smith backed it off to reduce tension look for a new smith. The proper way to reduce mainspring tension is to file the length of that screw down a bit at a time. It should always be tight.
