Primers, Primers

I'm pretty well stocked right now on Large Pistol, I have a decent amount of Small Pistol (I'd like more), I don't have nearly enough Small Rifle, and I don't have any Large Rifle.

I'd like to buy 1000 every time I use 1000 so I don't end up out of stock and unable to find components. However, the way things are right now, that isn't really possible.

Handgun bullets aren't a problem. I load almost all lead (which I get from Missouri Bullet, I might have to start casting my own eventually) and they always ship quickly and never seem to be out of stock on anything. Rifle bullets are another matter. I am just getting started loading for rifle, and I'm loading .223 and 45-70 Government. I'm going to load lead in the .45-70, which is also from Missouri Bullet and therefore not a problem (some are on the way now). For .223 I need 55 grain FMJ. Those can still be found from time to time, but prices are through the roof. I got a decent deal on 500 Winchester FMJs from Powder Valley that I put in with a powder order, but that is all I have at the moment. The .45-70 dies I got were Hornady, and since they didn't offer the free bullets in .458, I selected 55 grain FMJs for my free 100 bullets. So, I'll get those eventually.

Hopefully all this will cool off eventually and I can find what I need.

Anyone in Central NC or South Central VA want to trade some Large Rifle primers for small or large pistol? I need LR.

Don't blame me either, I haven't bought primers since March 08.:neener: That is an interesting question though JC. I was talking to the counter guy at Walmart and he told me they put out all the ammo they have at 8:00 every morning and it's usually gone in a couple of hours. He said they had six boxs of the Federal 22LR bulk pack and a guy came in and bought them all. As long as people keep buying like this the prices are going to go crazy.

Taking the information from Dean as a rule of thumb. There are 5 major suppliers of primers. If each averages 14 million manufactured a week, the math works out to only 14 thousand cases a week. If there are a 1 million reloaders in the country (wild a** guess) competing for those primers, then this shortage could be here for a long time.

How I arrived at one million reloaders. Figure 50 million gun owners in the country and that 2 % reload. That would mean 1 million reloaders. See what I mean about a WAG, the figure could be much higher.

So, does this mean it's not the Chinese buying all the primers?

We just spent a whole year on this Forum hearing people blame the war in Iraq, the Chinese, the metals commodities market, the Democrats, and conspiracies among the manufacturers.

Now it turns out we met the enemy, and they is us. Well, I'm just glad I stocked up before the idiots bought them all.:p
