I'm surprised no one mentioned the heat, especially this time of the year. Based upon that alone, I would consider an inside range like C2 Tactical (https://c2tactical.com). They have state-of-the-art facilities in Tempe and Scottsdale.

That was my first choice too. Just 25 minutes from their home. They turned it down. Thanks for the repy.
Your friends turned down your offer and Ben Avery was your first choice. Perhaps they may reconsider in an air-conditioned range.....

Another AZ story: My wife and I spent 10 days in Scottsdale a few years ago. Since I always look for shooting opportunities, I went to a gun shop and asked the young man who was helping me where they go to shoot outdoors. After looking at me like I was an idiot, he said, "We just take our targets, go out a-ways, find a spot, set up our stuff and shoot." With further discussion he said there is ample public land, mostly federally controlled BLM land. Most of the federal or state controlled land in Kansas is off limits for casual shooting.

That's no longer AZ. Places I used to shoot and hunt as a kid now have many houses. Blm looses land every year selling off to developers when it should be all our land to enjoy. You can still go to the desert yes, but there are not many places with backstops appropriate for shooting.

If this makes sense, cities that used to have space between no longer do. Phoenix blends into a metropolitan area that has no differentiation with other cities any more.

If I was going shooting myself, I'd go there. I have a chance to take a couple, who have never touched a gun, shooting for the first time. I have offered several public ranges to them and they just don't want to go there. I may have to shoot in their back acre if they are out of the city limits. They want to nail a target to a tree in an empty field, but they're afraid of scaring their prized prize winng Arabian horses. Thanks for listening.

With a backstop? Not many residences in Phoenix will have this. I have friends in the far outskirts and they still can't it's just not there.

1000 percent agreed, 105 today, and no one tell me but it's a dry heat. If you're not in a pool you gonna melt.

They've heard of too many shootings at public rangesin Phoenix to be comfortable at public ranges
sounds like a vague excuse to not go shooting. sounds like a reference to this: https://www.nytimes.com/2014/08/28/...-instructor-killed-by-girl-9-in-accident.html one is too many for some people, i guess.

here is the website for ben avery: https://www.azgfd.com/shooting/basf/ view the faq section and/or call and ask questions about your misgivings.

here is the web address for c2 tactical in scottsdale: https://c2tactical.com/range-info/scottsdale/ i shot at the c2 tactical in tempe back in april of this year. this organization is professional and monitors shooters at all times.

luck,

If you're referring to Ben Avery, it's by far the safest range I've seen. I've been every week 4-8 hours a day for almost 3 years, and never heard of anyone getting shot. I won't go to the popular indoor ranges because of the lack of supervision. Ben avery usually has 5-10 range officers on duty for 60 benches . If you go out in the desert it's far more dangerous, whether it be no cease fires, or gang members looking to gun jack. If that's not good enough, they should probably do something else. Shooting isn't for everyone.

I was all set for any where they would go. It never worked out, all I could do was over the kitchen table, put my guns in their hands and talk to them about safety. Now back in South Carolina. Thanks to everyone.

I haven't seen anybody mention Table Mesa Recreation Area north of Phoenix.
https://www.blm.gov/programs/recreation/arizona/recreational-shooting
It was wide open to recreational shooting a few years ago and the trash left by "Bubba" was something to behold. BLM has since cleaned it up and provided designated areas for shooting. It's worth checking out.

I live within 20 minutes of Rio Salado, so that's my go-to range. Memberships are reasonable and it is open to the public.
