We picked up our used Ruger MkII target that we bought on gunbroker a week ago.

The serial number shows that it was built in 1999 and it's the stainless target model with a 6 7/8 barrel.

I took it apart and cleaned it. Inside the chamber prior to the barrel are a lot of scratches. Is this normal?

It is tough to cock the pistol. I can cock it and it dry fires and everything seems to be normal but the effort to cock it is much higher than I have experienced with the MkII we have been renting at the range.

How do I make sure everything is okay?

Thanks

Hi, Schadenfreude,

Once the hammer is cocked, is the bolt still hard to retract?

I am not sure what you mean about scratches "in the chamber prior to the barrel". The chamber is the hole the cartridge goes into to fire. There should be no scratches in there at all. Do you mean the inside of the receiver, which is the tubular part the bolt slides in?

Some wear in the bolt way is normal, but scratches don't sound normal. Check to see if the recoil spring is in right and is not broken and that the bolt does not have anything that could interfere with movement. Then take the receiver off and see what the hammer looks like and if it moves normally.

The key word here is "used" so you could have bought someone else's troubles.

Once it is cocked, then the bolt slides very easy back and forth

Yeah I meant the tubular area prior to the chamber.

Here's a pic

its probably from someone using the wrong tools(i.e. a screwdriver)to clean the carbon build up.it probably hasnt been fired much(yet..lol)i purchased a new competion model and it was difficult to pul;l back the slide until i shot it a bunch(going on 6000 rnds).take a look at the feed ramp area.the ramp itself should be free from dents along the sides and gouges in the center.if there are gouges on the ramp, someone has definatly abused it.take it out and fire it ,let us know what happens.

I just got home from the range. I fired around 1100 rounds of Federal solid point and a bunch of Winchester hollow point that my brother gave me.

I had two failure to fire (ammo related I think) and 1 failure to extract.

The failure to extract was after about 900 rds so it was getting horribly dirty. Overall it was a solid performer.

My main gripe? I cannot focus on the front side very well. It's pretty dark at my range and the black front side evaded me at times.

Other than that..........

We paid $175 for the Stainless Ruger MkII 678 with original case, two mags, and all the papers. Then $17 shipping. $25 to the FFL. $14 for the Hogue Grips.

Completely satisfied and I think my Fiance will love it when she gets time to go to the range. (this is her pistole after all) :D :D

ruger mark 3 hunter

Well I recently bought the ruger mark 3 hunter. After about 400 rnds shot I notice some wear on the bolt, Is this normal?

You got a good used gun at a price that would be a real bargain in my area. My much older Mark11 still requires some effort to cock at first. The scratches sound cosmetic from being cleaned with the wrong tool. 1100 rds and 3 failures in a .22?? Be Happy!!:p
